Monkey Sanctuary Volunteer
Wild Futures
Wild Futures (Registered Charity 1102532) rescues and rehabilitates primates from the UK pet trade at our flagship project, The Monkey Sanctuary, in Looe, Cornwall. The Monkey Sanctuary is currently home to thirty-eight monkeys from five different species. Whilst our specialist primate caregivers are responsible for directly caring for the monkeys, we are looking for residential volunteers to come and help support us provide the very highest standards of care we take pride in. We are especially interested to hear from people who have availability to join us in 2025.
Our volunteers work five days each week for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of up to three months. We provide accommodation for volunteers on site, as well as food. Volunteers assist us in many valuable ways, including the daily cleaning of monkey enclosures (which can often take the whole morning); food bowl preparation; designing and creating enrichment items; general maintenance, cleaning and gardening jobs around the sanctuary; and communicating with members of the public during our open season (April to November). The work at the sanctuary is hard and physically demanding so our volunteers must be fit enough to cope with these demands. However, the sense of satisfaction of being a vital part of our sanctuary, and helping to ensure the monkeys live healthy and fulfilling lives, is immense. Our volunteers are trained to safely and competently carry out the duties required of them and are well supported during their time with us. Personal Protective Equipment will be supplied and must be worn at all times when carrying out monkey related tasks.
So our volunteers can learn more about our work, we have a learning programme of talks and workshops delivered by our staff and interns. We aim to have one talk/workshop each week during the working day for our volunteers to attend so you can learn more about our monkeys, their behaviour, their care and also issues affecting primates in the wider world.
No special qualifications or experience are needed; we just ask for volunteers to be enthusiastic and hard-working with a general concern for animals and the environment. You need to be over the age of 18 and have a good working knowledge of the English language. Our charity simply could not function without the help of people generously giving their time, so we would love to have you join our team! We can accommodate residential volunteers in same-sex dorm accommodation and provide basic vegetarian food supplies for volunteers to prepare their own meals with. We ask for a £40 per week donation from volunteers staying on-site with us to help cover the costs of our volunteer programme.
