The Scottish Botanists’ Conference (SBC) is a major annual gathering of botanists from across Scotland and beyond. This year’s event takes place on Saturday 1st November 2025 at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE). Jointly hosted by the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI), the Botanical Society of Scotland (BSS) and RBGE, the conference draws more than 200 attendees each year.

The SBC offers a vibrant mix of talks, training workshops, and exhibitions, with something for everyone – from beginner botanists to seasoned experts.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic volunteer organiser or project manager to help deliver this unique event, working alongside the BSBI’s Scotland Officer and a team of experienced volunteers. The role offers a great opportunity to get involved in Scotland’s botanical community and gain hands-on experience in event delivery.

The role includes:

  • Coordinating pre- and post-event communications and feedback
  • Liaising with partners and individuals to source exhibits
  • Handling venue logistics, including catering, room bookings and technical support
  • Helping to build the programme, with a focus on spotlighting student research
  • Supporting on-site setup and takedown, including signage and room arrangements
  • Managing student volunteers

Additional details:

  • Time commitment: Averaging half a day per week from August to November
  • Location: Home-based, with support provided by BSBI and partners
  • Expenses: We can cover travel costs for the organiser to attend the conference if they wish

About Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI)

The BSBI is for everyone who cares about the wild plants of Britain and Ireland. Since 1836, we've been promoting the study, understanding and enjoyment of British and Irish botany. We support all botanists - beginner or expert, amateur or professional - as they identify, record and map what grows where: our data and knowledge underpin evidence-based conservation of the British and Irish flora.
