Atlantic58 is a small but rapidly growing consultancy based in the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. We provide a range of professional environmental consultancy services, focusing on projects within the unique social, cultural, and ecological environment of the Western Isles. Our clients range from local community development trusts to global multinationals and cover a wide variety of sectors including renewables, infrastructure, the space sector, aquaculture, forestry, fisheries, and crofting.

The Role

A position is now available for a Principal or Senior EIA Consultant to support our diverse range of projects across the onshore and offshore environment. This role is ideal for an experienced Senior EIA Consultant, or an existing EIA Consultant looking for progression and an opportunity to grow their knowledge and skills into new sectors.

The role is highly diverse and, although focused on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), will also include feasibility projects, delivery of local initiatives, community development projects, and survey/site work, depending on experience.

Core Responsibilities

The role will be client-facing and tasks are likely to include:

  • Managing the EIA process for a range of developments and production of EIA Reports.
  • Supporting or leading the delivery of non-EIA projects, community development and other initiatives.
  • Supervising, authoring (where relevant) and / or reviewing EIA chapters in line with existing experience and technical discipline.
  • Coordinating EIA and other project processes.
  • Managing sub-contractors.
  • Stakeholder engagement and consultation, occasionally through formal PAC processes.
  • Line management duties TBC dependant on experience or alternatively, supporting / mentoring junior members of staff.
  • Conducting or managing research and site surveys/assessments in line with relevant qualifications and experience.
  • Contributing to team training, research, and business development activities.
  • Develop personal and professional competencies with a relevant trade association, e.g., IEMA / CIEEM.
  • Undertake training to develop skills across a range of disciplines and continual professional development.

The Location

Our office is set within the picturesque Lews Castle Grounds in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. The office space is dog-friendly and includes a private enclosed outdoor area. We also form part of the UHI North, West, Hebrides campus in Stornoway and have close links with academia for collaborative course development and research opportunities. Although, much is linked to our local knowledge and understanding of the unique nature of the Western Isles remote/hybrid working from home arrangements can be negotiated.

Essential

  • The candidate will hold a relevant degree or qualification with demonstrable EIA experience.
  • A specialism in at least one onshore or offshore EIA discipline, or proven general EIA project management experience through consultancy, planning, or regulation.
  • Creative thinking approaches to problem solving complex regulatory challenges.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in a technical role within an environmental consultancy or regulatory background, or similar experience in regulatory / planning.
  • Consultation, project management/delivery experience.
  • Excellent communication, IT, and reporting skills with high levels of attention to detail. Examples of reporting will be requested as part of the interview process.
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines and adapt to a range of project requirements.
  • A full UK driving licence and ability to travel.
  • Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • Competent in data analysis and mapping using QGIS (ArcGIS also acceptable).
  • The candidate will have relevant professional qualifications (e.g., MRTPI, IEMA, CIEEM, CIWEM) or evidence that they are working or have a desire to work toward these.
  • Knowledge/experience of BNG (Biodiversity Net Gain)
  • Experience in one or more of the following sectors: ports/ harbours, aquaculture, space, renewables, or infrastructure projects.
  • Understanding of environmental legislation, regulation, and good practice.
