Job Opportunity: School Streets Officer

Location: Sheffield
Salary: FTE £25,000 - £29,000 – depending on experience
Contract Type: Full-time (37.5 hours per week) Fixed Term September 2025 – March 2026 (with a view to extend for another year subject to funding)

We are on a mission to transform the way we travel, and we’re looking for a proactive and enthusiastic person with a passion for sustainable transport to support the development of Sheffield City Council’s School Streets project to improve safety around school gates, increase active journeys to and from school and improve air quality around schools.

About the Role

As the School Streets Officer, you’ll play a vital role working with Sheffield City Council via PWLC Projects to deliver, implement, maintain, monitor and evaluate School Streets schemes across Sheffield.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, implement and monitor a School Streets Engagement Plan in partnership with your colleagues
  • Support schools and their communities to successfully implement and maintain School Streets by working with school staff, volunteers, parents, children and residents in promoting the schemes
  • Undertake communication and consultation with a wide variety of stakeholders including public and SCC Member engagement to build support for the School Streets schemes
  • Monitor and evaluate existing School Streets schemes to determine efficacy of the project, including conducting regular site visits to ensure schemes are being effectively implemented and evaluate whether further support is required
  • Undertake consultation and evaluate the potential of new School Streets schemes, including engaging with residents, pupils, parents, and SCC Members.
  • Support and recruit School Streets volunteers to help with the day to day operation of the schemes
  • Identify and resolve issues arising through the implementation of School Streets schemes
  • Support the Council in the implementation of sustainable travel initiatives, including supporting the Sheffield STARS School Engagement Officers to run campaigns or activities that will help them become STARS accredited.
  • Prepare and present a detailed report each term, including a log of school meetings and interactions with schools and the wider community, and the outcomes of these

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a dynamic and motivated individual with:

  • A passion for sustainability and active travel
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with schools, students, and stakeholders including written, face to face, online and telephone
  • Ability to plan and allocate work tasks and to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Knowledge or experience of current transport policy, the key issues and challenges involved in the promotion of sustainable travel and experience of developing resources and initiatives that are designed to deliver behaviour change
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimum supervision, whilst also supporting colleagues and working as a team

Working Conditions:

This role is based in Sheffield and the post holder will be expected to travel to local schools on a regular basis. Frequent travelling and working in outside in all weather conditions is an expected part of the post. Occasional overnight stays away from home, weekend, early and late working may be required.
