Environmental Compliance Business Partner

Reporting to: Head of Sustainability & Social Value

Our carbon management strategy, along with our proactive drive to work with airlines and other airport businesses to reduce their emissions, has been awarded with the highest accreditation amongst UK airports. Our Sustainability Strategy sets challenging targets and actions for how we will decarbonise our own operations and we are on track to meet our net zero operations commitment by 2030. We are also recognised as leaders in collaborating within the aviation industry to support the development of zero emissions flight.

We’re looking for an Environmental Compliance Business Partner to join us and play a vital role in driving our environmental and sustainability objectives across the Airport – from construction projects to operations. As part of the Planning and Sustainability team you’ll maintain high standards of environmental management and compliance. You'll raise environmental awareness, lead incident learning and continuous improvement to protect the local environment and communities. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual who can manage multiple projects, seeking to continuously improve internal processes, with a confident approach to stakeholder management.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain and deliver continuous improvement through the BRS EMS to ensure legal compliance and ISO14001 standards are met.
  • Plan, schedule and conduct environmental audits and oversee environmental monitoring, continuously reviewing compliance requirements with ISO14001 standards, environmental licenses, planning conditions and Section 106 obligations, and other public commitments made in relation to the environment and sustainability.
  • Prepare detailed audit reports, highlighting non-conformities, areas for improvement, and opportunities for embedding best practice. Work with BRS departments across the airport (including but not limited to motor transport, engineering, airside operations, development) to develop and implement corrective and preventive actions based on audit findings.
  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of external ISO certification audits. Act as a liaison between the organisation and external auditors.
  • Ensure that all management system documentation, including policies, procedures, and records, are up-to-date and compliant with ISO standards.
  • Deliver training, coaching, toolbox talks and environmental compliance briefings to BRS departments across the airport to drive environmental awareness and compliance.
  • Collect accurate data on the airports environmental and sustainability performance, reporting these internally and externally through the Annual Monitoring Report.
  • Manage the investigation of reported environmental incidents, including identification of root cause, trends, remedial action, and lessons learnt to build continuous improvement.
  • Respond to environmental complaints, assessing the validity, cause, and any actions arising in a time manner as required by the Airports complaints handling policies
  • Manage the implementation of the Bristol Airport Noise Action Plan and review and revise when required.
  • Manage the award of grants under the criteria and terms of the Noise Insulation Scheme
  • Manage external noise consultants to:
    • Undertake annual noise mapping and reporting in accordance with planning conditions.
    • Undertake strategic noise mapping in accordance with the Environmental Noise Regulations and provide to Defra.
    • Undertake mobile noise monitoring to gather noise data required to handle complaints and noise insulation grant applications.
    • Advise on environmental effects of airspace change proposals
  • Oversee the implementation of the Ground Noise Management Strategy, working with operational teams to ensure compliance.
  • Stakeholder engagement and reporting on environmental issues and compliance

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential skills

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Membership of IEMA, CIEM, and/or NEBOSH.
  • Minimum of five years of internal environmental auditing and compliance experience.
  • Proven ability to build effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and to effect or influence behavioural change.
  • Highly customer-focused and able to communicate effectively and professionally at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
  • Willingness and drive to learn and actively explore new ways of working to deliver continuous improvement.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload and be

Desirable Skills

  • Experience gained within the infrastructure sector, ideally aviation.
  • Experience of effectively managing external consultancy resource and budget management.
