A bit about us...

Friends of the Lake District is an independent charity and the only membership organisation dedicated to protecting and enhancing Cumbria’s landscapes. We believe that the Lake District offers some of the most spectacular and precious landscapes in England and so we campaign to ensure that these landscapes are tranquil, rich in cultural heritage and environmentally healthy for the benefit of local communities, visitors and wildlife.

We’ve been passionate about the Cumbrian landscape for more than 90 years. In that time, our work has evolved from defensive campaigning to protect the landscape from harm to proactively influencing key decision-makers about the future of our landscape. Our ownership of land has also grown to represent a rich source of examples of good practice to use in our advocacy.

We couldn’t do all this amazing work without our members, volunteers and other supporters. As Campaigns Officer, a key part of your work will be to inspire and mobilise our current supporters to back our campaigns and to reach and recruit new supporters to add their voice.

It is a great time to join Friends of the Lake District to build on our successes and help shape our future.

What about you?

We want you to have a passion for what we do and be committed to do your very best for our amazing organisation. This role will be focussed on designing and delivering campaigns that inspire and mobilise and ‘shift the dial’ in terms of landscape policy and practice. You will be full of creative ideas for how to frame issues in ways that gather political traction and are engaging for actual and potential supporters. A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion should drive how you engage people.

This role will require you to work across teams and so it’s important that you are an effective collaborator and someone who likes working with others.

As Campaigns Officer, you will

  • Support the design, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of powerful campaigns to help fulfil our Strategic Goals, including by:
    • Facilitating consultation with other staff, Trustees and allies to identify campaign goals and objectives.
    • Analysing the external context for political opportunities and to ensure a clear niche and added value to Friends’ campaigns.
    • Developing ideas for creative campaign actions and engagement devices.
    • Working with other staff in crafting press and social media outputs to promote campaign messages.
    • Ensuring regular review of campaign progress and the generation of information to enable monitoring, reporting and course correction.
  • Build relationships with relevant partners e.g. local groups and societies, other local and national NGOs, in order to develop opportunities for joint campaigning.
  • Develop and deliver a programme of online and offline events and activities to raise the organisation’s profile, ensure engagement in campaigns and capture leads for supporter and membership development.
  • Work with other staff, principally Fundraising, Volunteering and Engagement, to deliver and monitor a supporter development strategy that optimises the value of new and current supporters (increases donating, volunteering and participation in campaign actions).

This will be a supporter-facing role and will require the successful applicant to travel to a range of events and, at times, work outside our normal operating hours (time off in lieu will be available for evening / weekend working).
