Estuary Restoration Officer

The Wyre Rivers Trust is a registered charity that has been in operation for several years for the purpose of improving the ecological status of the river Wyre and its catchment.

Founded by three Angling clubs and supported by many community groups the Trust has carried out works within the catchment by volunteers and contractors to improve spawning conditions and habitat improvements for the benefit of migratory fish, coarse fish and eels. In 2013 the Wyre Rivers Trust became host of the Wyre Waters Catchment Partnership and begun to deliver works on the catchment scale with a wide range of benefits for the Wyre catchment.

More recently the trust has become more successful in securing funding for a number of projects which will be delivered throughout the Wyre catchment. The projects focus on a wide range of issues which include biodiversity, water quality, natural flood management, habitat creation and habitat connectivity. 

The trust has recently created its integrated catchment plan, which contains a comprehensive list of priorities within the Wyre catchment, these have been reviewed and agreed by our partners. As part of this, the Wyre Rivers Trust worked closely with Wyre Council and partners to develop the Our Future Coast Project, this project will see the delivery of a wide range of coastal projects to help reduce flood risk in an innovative manner.

Our Future Coast is one of the 25 pioneering projects awarded funding by DEFRA (via the Environment Agency) under the Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme (FCRIP) to explore new approaches to tackle the threat of flooding and improve coastal resilience. In line with best practice, this requires a long-term partnership approach working together across disciplines with engineers, planners, farmers, historians, and scientists etc. Our Future Coast places great importance on the engagement of local communities, with key stakeholders involved early and working as a team to build understanding and become champions for the approaches taken. 

An Estuary Restoration Officer is required to help deliver one of these projects within the Wyre Estuary. It is expected that in their day-to-day role the Estuary Restoration Officer will support the delivery of this plan by providing support with the development, delivery, and management of saltmarsh restoration projects, delivering ecological surveys, delivering engagement events, developing, and delivering an education programme with reference to saltmarshes and in the management of the Trusts growing volunteer base. This role is both varied and wide reaching and would suit an ambitious candidate, keen to develop their skills.

The role will be based at the Wyre RT Offices in Myerscough, Lancashire, the candidate will be expected to work across the catchment and hot desk at the offices of various partners. The post will report to the Wyre Rivers Trust General Manager and Chairman.
