The successful candidate will work as an assistant scientific officer, supporting the data collection programmes within the Marine and or Freshwater groups of FAEB. Work for the marine fisheries group will include surveys on board the AFBI research vessel R.V. Corystes, and other chartered vessels, while work for the freshwater group will involve working in and around freshwater bodies (lakes and rivers) on small boats. The post holder(s) will report to a Scientific Officer grade or above.

The successful applicant’s duties will include the following: -

  • Working at sea or on freshwater bodies on scientific research and chartered vessels up to 120 days per year, trips may be of up to 3 weeks duration. During these trips successful candidates will be required, to participate in water and biological sampling, assist in data collection, us remote equipment, to include deploying and recovery.
  • Participation in research surveys by assisting with survey preparation; planning trips, collecting data and samples relating to commercial fish, shellfish, plankton and/or environmental variables and maintain sampling equipment. This will include driving to and from field work locations and transportation of scientific equipment, samples and staff.
  • Processing biological and water samples, including fish, shellfish, plankton and water chemistry. The post holder(s) will also assist in data recording and record keeping.
  • Data entry tasks and assisting in the production of summary reports, and survey results using a range of appropriate software.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory equipment and instrument calibration checks in accordance with existing ISO9001 accreditation.
  • Working effectively and co-operatively as part of a team.
  • The successful candidate will be required to drive manual departmental vehicles as part of their duties and must therefore have a full current UK driving licence for manual vehicles to meet the requirements of the post in full.
  • Working at sea requires candidates to undertake physically demanding work and manual handling of marine/freshwater organisms.
  • The post-holder should be comfortable putting up with adverse conditions at sea for long periods of time (motion sickness) and working in close proximity with others (i.e. shared sleeping quarters on seagoing vessels).
