Hours of work: Full-time

Normal minimum hours of attendance for the post are 36 hours per week over a 5-day period, Monday to Friday.

Annual Leave:

The annual leave allowance is 25 days per year, rising to 30 days per year after 5 years service. There are also 12 days public and privilege leave. Who are JNCC?

Established in 1991, we’re the UK’s statutory advisor on issues affecting the natural environment across the UK and internationally. Our primary role is advising all four Governments of the UK. We also work with private sector organisations to support decision making on the sustainable use of marine waters and natural resources around the UK. JNCC is led by the Joint Committee, which brings together members from the nature conservation bodies for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and independent members appointed by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs under an independent Chair. Support is provided to the Committee by approx. 300 people who bring together scientific and technical expertise, extensive knowledge of policy at global, European and national levels, and skills in working with other organisations. Staff are based in two main offices in Peterborough and Aberdeen.

We are looking to recruit an Operational Services and Health & Safety Officer, based at our Peterborough office. This role will assist the Facilities Liaison and Health & Safety Advisor in monitoring health & safety, facilities and office management policies and processes. Also to provide support and advice on health and safety matters to all JNCC staff including the completion of office and travel risk assessments. In addition, the role will assist with a broad range of service functions at the Peterborough office including office maintenance, fire safety, health and safety and other support services.

Post Duties

  • Writing and supporting in the development of health & safety policies, systems of work and procedures.
  • Advise on and review risk assessments submitted across the organisation.
  • Assist JNCC to meet its statutory obligations in all areas pertaining to health, safety and wellbeing at work, including statutory training and reporting.
  • Give advice and guidance with regards to health and safety and wellbeing.
  • Record and investigate reported work-related incidents, accidents and near misses.
  • Line manage a small Operational Services team (3 people), including day-to-day work, performance and personal development.
  • Develop administrative systems, practices and services relating to filing, financial, reporting and other administrative support, that efficiently and effectively meets the needs of JNCC staff.
  • You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Peterborough office and operational services.
  • Provide representation and be an ambassador for JNCC at cross-government meetings and workshops for health and safety.

Technical

To be a successful candidate you will:

  • Have NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health or IOSH Managing Safety at Work. DSE assessor qualification.
  • Be proficient in word, excel, email, Microsoft teams and powerpoint.

Experience

To be a successful candidate you will have:

  • Experience in production and reviewing of health and safety risk assessments
  • Problem solving skills that can be applied in the field of health and safety.
  • Awareness of GDPR, particularly the need for confidentiality when dealing with sensitive organisational and individual data (DSE assessments).
  • Gathering, analysing and reporting on key health & safety data/statistics.
  • Good planning, organisational and time management skills with demonstrable experience of working in a busy office, with relevant office services/facilities skills or equivalent experience and transferable skills.
  • Professional approach coupled with good interpersonal skills; good verbal, written communication and presentation skills with a high level of attention to detail.
