About the role

The Royal Household is committed to protecting and enhancing nature across the Estate, with ambitious plans and a focus on long-term impact.

We’re looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable Nature Officer to lead on the delivery, development and reporting of our Nature Plan, providing expert advice across various projects, initiatives and operations.

Primarily based in London and Windsor, you’ll also support wider Estate work. It’s a rare opportunity to use your ecological expertise to influence how we manage land, enhance biodiversity and deliver habitat improvements in some of the UK’s most treasured green spaces.

Key responsibilities

  • You’ll work with the Head of Sustainability to lead the Nature Plan, ensuring it reflects ecological best practice and supports our wider sustainability goals.
  • Consolidating biodiversity data and coordinating an ecological survey programme, you’ll use insights to inform action and steer nature positive work.
  • You’ll support development and delivery of land management plans and habitat improvement projects that promote nature-positive principles.
  • You’ll collaborate with internal teams, particularly our garden team and visitor services, to provide ecological advice on projects and embed biodiversity principles across daily operations.
  • You’ll build and manage GIS (Geographic Information System) resources for reporting and planning, and ensure compliance with environmental legislation and internal standards.
  • You’ll also contribute to sustainability reporting, helping to track progress and communicate the Royal Household’s commitment to protecting and enhancing nature.
  • With a holistic approach, you’ll foster partnership opportunities with external stakeholders and experts, looking to embed best practice in ecology and conservation into everything we do.

Essential Criteria

  • With hands-on experience in UK nature conservation, including habitat management, landscape-scale projects and associated funding mechanisms, you’re an expert in your field with a clear passion for protecting nature and biodiversity.
  • You also have up-to-date knowledge of UK and European conservation legislation, markets policy.
  • You’ll be confident in applying established ecological methods, including the DEFRA biodiversity metric, to guide planning and decision-making in balance with organisational needs and strategy.
  • You’ll be proactive and well-organised, with the initiative to manage multiple projects and a varied workload.
  • You’ll have solid GIS and mapping skills, along with strong analytical skills to interpret complex data sets and ecological information.
  • A strong communicator and collaborator, you’ll be able to build trusted relationships with internal teams, external partners and stakeholders.
  • You’ll also be able to communicate technical ecological information clearly, both in writing and in person, to a wide range of audiences.
  • Happy working independently, you’ll also enjoy working alongside colleagues to carve out and drive the change towards a more sustainable future.

Interviews are expected to take place on 13 June for the first stage, with second stage interviews scheduled for 26 and 27 June.
