Vacancy: Senior Full-Stack Developer
Salary: Up to £55,000 FTE, depending on experience
Term: 4 or 5 days per week (negotiable), permanent position
Experience: 4 years+ with a relevant degree or additional years' experience

Scene is recruiting 1 full-stack software developer with a focus on back-end development and a commitment to a socially just transition to a net zero economy. You will work as part of our existing development team, based at our Edinburgh office.

Scene Connect ("Scene") is a leading renewable energy consultancy in local energy and energy access, with innovation projects in the UK and the Global South. We work across the UK, and are currently part of international projects in Ethiopia, Malawi and Mozambique.

With the ongoing success of our innovation work, we are looking to expand our technical team with new appointments – with specific focus on developing our building energy modelling capability to support the decarbonisation of homes and domestic demand response.

We are looking for candidates who buy-in to what we stand for, both in terms of our mission and our collaborative approach to team working. Check out our projects to see what we have done since we started in Edinburgh in 2011. We are a small but expanding business - we currently have 14 staff across our Edinburgh and Liverpool offices and support remote working.

We are an Equal Opportunities employer, and we are committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from Women, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates. We positively encourage applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates.

You must have the right to live and work in the UK from the date of commencement of employment.

Senior Software Developer

We are looking for a software developer with confidence in the development of web services and user interfaces as well as experience in software development as part of a team. Candidates with passion for decarbonising the energy sector and modular micro-services architecture are invited to apply.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with at least 4 years of experience in software development. Ideally you will also have a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a relevant subject, or additional years of work experience.

What You'll Do

  • Work on an exciting new product - "Shared Works" - to help people better understand the energy use in their homes and make recommendations to reduce energy use, cost and carbon emissions. This will involve developing new features to improve energy demand modelling of existing buildings and model the effects of installing different low carbon technologies, energy efficiency measures and smart controls on energy use;
  • Work as part of our ZUoS team, joining an established team of 3 senior developers, a solutions architect, a technical modelling lead and a built environment researcher;
  • Work in a friendly and constructive environment that supports your growth;
  • Occasionally be required to switch context to other R&D or innovation projects emerging from our renewable energy and low carbon consultancy work.

Who You Are

  • You have experience of working as a software developer, ideally on web-based projects;
  • You have knowledge of Python or are willing to learn.
  • You have a good understanding of data structures and how to apply them effectively to solve problems.
  • You care about writing readable, well tested code.
  • Passion for web technologies and a desire to remain up to date with the latest technologies and share your knowledge.

Technologies we use

We use the following technologies in our product and service development. While you may not have professional experience in these, you will be expected to demonstrate the ability to learn and to problem solve:

  • Python / Django / Fast API
  • TypeScript / React
  • PostgreSQL / InfluxDB
  • Docker/Kubernetes
  • Terraform
  • Google Cloud Platform

Application deadline: 30th May 2025 (interviews may commence earlier)
