About the Role

We are seeking a knowledgeable and proactive Climate Emergency Officer to join our Climate and Environment Team. Tackling the climate and ecological emergencies is one of our two core policies as a Council and this new role will support the team who are key to turning our core policy into action.

The Climate Emergency Officer will have responsibilities for data and reporting, action planning and tracking, as well as policy horizon scanning and development.

The role will lead the Council’s annual progress report publication and complete the annual CDP Disclosure. It will be responsible for accounting for/reporting of Council emissions using Local Government Association (LGA) tools.

Using their knowledge of our progress, the Climate Emergency Officer will support service teams across the Council with planning to identify actions to reduce emissions, as well as work with Business Intelligence colleagues to shape internal climate-related KPIs and reporting metrics. They will maintain a watching brief on developing national climate and sustainability legislation and policy – acting as a hub of expertise and communicating this with the wider council.

We are proud to have been ranked 7th out of 186 councils in the most recent Council Climate Action Scorecard tracker. The Climate Emergency Officer will join the team at a key time as we bring our existing strategies and plans together into a combined Climate and Nature Strategy for both our own operations and the BANES district.

About You

You are passionate about tackling the climate and ecological emergencies and have a good understanding of the climate data and information needed to support and deliver change. This can either be from a single organisation, supporting a sector or from within government.

While enjoying the detail of the data, you also like scanning for what is coming and how we can use changes to climate and sustainability policy and legislation to influence positive change for our district, as well as for our organisation.

If you are interested in this post and require more details or just to chat through the role and what’s involved, please contact Fiona Powell, Senior Climate Strategy Advisor, [email protected]
