Established in 1994, the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) is a registered charity that has pioneered practical, locally-based education and monitoring programmes on cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) in the Hebrides.
We conduct long-term monitoring of distribution, abundance and habitat use of the cetaceans in Hebridean waters. The aim of this monitoring work is to provide those who manage Scotland’s marine wildlife and habitats with information they need to achieve effective conservation of the area’s extraordinary biodiversity.
This monitoring work also provides the materials for our work in environmental education, helping to raise public awareness about the wildlife which exists in this unique region. The Trust believes that by educating people about the marine environment we are contributing to safeguard biodiversity now and for the future. We are educating the citizens and decision makers of tomorrow.
