Course: Learning Day: Wildlife Highways - Connecting Habitats
SCOTLAND: The Big Picture
Scotland’s wildlife is on the move - but without connected habitats, many species are struggling to survive. Nature networks create vital lifelines, linking wild spaces through corridors and stepping stones of habitat, allowing natural processes to flow and biodiversity to recover. The Scottish Government has recognised their importance as a key solution to reversing nature loss.
This immersive learning day will introduce the why, what and how of nature networks from a rewilding perspective. Through expert-led discussions and field visits, you’ll explore real-life rewilding projects and leave with practical knowledge and inspiration to start designing your own nature network - whether on a small patch of land or a large-scale project.
The Learning Day will cover:
- Why nature networks are essential for wildlife survival
- How to identify biodiversity hotspots
- How to understand landscapes and ecological connections
- Ways to join up habitats - from woodlands to wetlands
- What to create where - and how to fine tune your design
- How to design for natural processes and dynamic change
- How to engage neighbours and communities
- How to balance ambition with realistic goals
- How to find and exploit funding opportunities
- Steps to kickstart your own rewilding project
This Learning Day is for you if:
- you’re a student, graduate or interested in pursuing a career within the rewilding/nature restoration sector.
- you’re a land manager interested in seeing rewilding in action and starting your own rewilding journey.
- you’re a local resident or visitor curious about how rewilding looks and works.
About SCOTLAND: The Big Picture
SCOTLAND: The Big Picture works to drive the recovery of nature across Scotland through rewilding, in response to the growing climate and biodiversity crises.
Our vision is of a vast network of rewilded land and water across Scotland, where wildlife flourishes and people thrive.
