The Conservation Volunteers have an opportunity for a Trainee Leader/Volunteer Officer (VO) to work on projects in and around Croydon improving green spaces. We work on a wide variety of sites, from urban parks and ponds to ancient woodland and chalk grassland meadows. As a VO you will be helping volunteers to engage with and improve their environment and enjoy healthier lifestyles. You will play an integral part in the smooth running of the Croydon projects including:

  • Pre-project planning: risk assessments, site surveys, and liaising with local authorities, and clients.
  • Practical wildlife and green space management & leadership: Leading and assisting groups of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds on project days to complete conservation tasks.
  • Administration & development: Supporting the day to day running of the project and helping to explore and develop new projects.

Reasonable travel expenses are covered, and a full training package is provided including Project Leadership, First Aid, Risk Assessment, and Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups. Within each project there is scope for you to tailor the role to your requirements and you can have a positive influence on the project's development.

What you need:

An enthusiasm for the environment and working with people. If you have an interest in gaining practical skills, learning about leading groups and organising work days, this is for you.

A full clean or near clean driving license is desirable but not essential.

Acceptance as a Volunteer Officer is subject to satisfactory DBS clearance at the enhanced level.

How much time:

To gain real benefit from the placement be prepared to commit to three days per week (usually including Wednesdays & Thursdays) for a minimum of 6 months.
