Learning Volunteer - Hampstead Heath Education Centre

The City of London Corporation’s Open Space Learning team believes the best way for children and adults to connect to Open Spaces is to experience them. Hampstead Heath Schools programme encourages pupils to explore this beautiful open space through inspiring learning outdoor sessions. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who could support our Primary Schools Officer and Education Rangers with the delivery of this programme.

If this is something that inspires you, we would like to hear from you.

What you will be doing:

Supporting the Learning Officer and Education Rangers with the delivery of outdoor educational sessions and the logistical and practical elements of the school visits by:

  • Organising equipment and other resources for various activities and re-setting or tidying these items after use.
  • Supporting small groups of students during the activities.
  • Welcoming school groups as they arrive
  • Guiding visiting groups to our teaching spaces.

There will be opportunities to:

  • Support the Learning Officer and Education Rangers when developing new sessions.
  •  Develop the skills to effectively communicate with small groups of children in an outdoor learning setting.
  • Develop greater understanding of how to use learner focused techniques to engage pupils with the outdoors.
  • Develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the landscape and wildlife of Hampstead Heath
  • Be part of an amazing and friendly team.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Enthusiastic about learning in an outdoor setting
  • Able to work in a team of staff and volunteers
  • Interested in developing skills in working with children and young people.

What you will gain:

  • Volunteering is fun! You meet new people, explore new places and get behind the scenes of how things run.
  • It is a great way to try out and become good at new things or get better at things you already do.
  • We provide opportunities for volunteers to socialise and to celebrate and say thank you for your contribution.

We will support you by:

  • Paying reasonable travel expenses (Please note, we encourage people to volunteer locally)
  • Providing a dedicated member of staff as your point of contact from the beginning till the end of your placement
  • Giving you an induction and plan to help you to get the most out of your placement
  • Providing on-going training to help you get better at your role

All volunteers are placed for three months initially which helps managers and volunteers to get a feel for how well the role and volunteer are matched.

For this role your commitment can be agreed with the Schools Officer at your first meeting.
