We are looking for committed and creative individuals with a passion for sand dune conservation to join us.

 As part of North Devon Dynamic Dunescapes team based in Woolacombe, the role will be involved in all aspects of Dunescapes delivery. There is also scope to tailor aspects of the role to the individual’s own background and interests.

The successful candidate ideally should have some experience of working with local groups and stakeholders to communicate wildlife messages. Good experience of using social media would also be helpful.

Hours: This role will take 30 hours a week over four days which may include weekends and we are looking for someone who can commit to a placement of 12 months.

The placement is set within a remote coastal area and requires spending time across the area undertaking tasks set by the Dunescapes Engagement Officer and ranger team. In regard to this, the placement is able to offer onsite accommodation. Driving is essential.

The role 

Candidates will contribute towards Dynamic Dunescapes – a nationwide sand dune restoration project that The National Trust, PlantLife and Christie’s Estates are working in partnership to deliver in North Devon.

Main activities:


  • Develop North Devon Dynamic Dunescapes social media presence, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
  • Update and add content to the central Dynamic Dunescapes website
  • Support production of the North Devon National Trust’s newsletters


  • Research and develop new resources for the project
  • Assist with project development
  • Work to maintain relations and communication with partner NGOs and governmental organisations
  • Share information and resources with partners
  • Assist the Dynamic Dunescapes Engagement Officer in planning, organising and delivering on both virtual and face to face meetings


Assist the Dunescapes Engagement Officer with the development and delivery of outreach engagement activities and events including rock pool rambles, tractor trailer rides, beach cleans and arts and crafts that showcase the wildlife and cultural heritage of sand dunes in North Devon.


Assist the Dunescapes Engagement Officer with the delivery of The John Muir Environment Award Scheme.

Assist the Dunescapes Engagement Officer with the development and delivery of formal educational training to teachers and students between Key Stages 1 – 4 both on site and at school premises.


Successful candidates will support the National Trust rangers based at Woolacombe.

This aspect of the placement will offer the successful applicant a range of practical experiences in practical habitat conservation, dune management and species monitoring.

A training package relevant to the role will be given, which may include training in some or all of the following: use of brush cutter, safe hand tool use, risk assessments, wildlife ID and survey, data handling and recording and engagement.

Volunteers are entitled to 25 days holiday during their placement. If volunteering as a student placement, you will be able to carry out your own research project if required by your university as part of your assessment, supported by friendly Dunescapes staff with significant experience in their field.
