Community Volunteer Energy Advisor

CREW Energy

Volunteer • Part Time Katherin Garcia

Sectors: carbon, climate & energy, sustainability

Closing date: Monday, 2nd November 2020

The aim of the role is to have a tangible impact on local people's lives by reducing fuel poverty. This is achieved by advising them in an informed and personable manner to help them make a positive change. Due to the current situation with Covid-19, we have adapted our energy café service to provide the same quality of help and support through our dedicated phone line. This will ensure our clients, community and volunteers are safe and able to continue providing and receiving support.

Person qualities and skills

  • A good understanding of spoken and written English, other languages are extra desirable!
  • Basic numeracy skills, competent using IT and the internet.
  • An interest in helping people and tackling the climate emergency in a hyper local way.
  • A willingness to learn new skills and knowhow, maybe even getting involved in other areas of CREW activity once trained in this role.
  • A friendly, positive approach.
  • A minimum of 6 hours a week until end of March 2021.
  • When fully trained and coached by us comfortable with handling call backs solo.
  • A team player and good working autonomously.

The main duties for this role will involve:

  • Providing telephone advice and support through our dedicated phone service to clients within the community within South West London.
  • These will focus on engaging with local people to discuss their utility bills and how much they are paying for their energy.
  • The volunteer will then work with the individual to understand the best way to help them, whether by changing energy supplier, putting them in touch with an organisation that can write off some of their debt or improving energy efficiency in their home.
  • Volunteers must be available for 3 training sessions where each will last 3.5 hours, this will be held online over Zoom.

What you will gain from this

By volunteering with us not only you will help to reduce fuel poverty in some of the most deprived areas in London, you will also be trained in the best way to assist local people in meeting these aims. As a result, volunteers will develop their knowledge base on this important subject and gain new and employable skills.

About CREW Energy

CREW is a community energy group working with local people to reduce fuel poverty and carbon emissions. Mainly based in SW London, CREW holds Energy Cafés in public buildings and community venues where volunteers advise people on how to reduce their bills, improve their energy efficiency and reduce their water usage at home. Due to the situation with COVID-19, these energy cafes have been moved to a telephone service where we can help people within the community with the same quality of support and advice, helping them reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions.
