Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust is the leading voice for wildlife conservation across Hertfordshire and Middlesex. With volunteers, we manage a network of nature reserves covering nearly 2,000 acres, from beautiful wetlands and woodlands to rare patches of heath and orchard. We take practical action every day to help wildlife flourish and connect our local communities to nature.

Join and lead the Trust’s team of gardening volunteers looking after the Grebe House Wildlife Garden in St Albans.

We are looking for a keen and experienced volunteer gardener to help guide our team of wildlife gardeners at Grebe House in Verulamium Park. The garden is popular with park visitors and a wonderful opportunity for the Trust to show what individuals can do for wildlife at home.

Role responsibilities:

  • Oversight of wildlife gardening volunteer activities at Grebe House including risk assessing activities
  • Working with staff and other garden volunteers to agree schedules of activity
  • Helping to plan new areas of planting and other developments in the garden
  • Regular and seasonal garden maintenance and improvements – weeding, pruning and tidying up, planting up new areas
  • Occasional support for engagement and community activities in the garden.
  • Gardening tools and equipment will be provided with a view for this role being responsible for their maintenance

Skills and experience you will need:

  • Experience of planning and looking after gardens
  • Knowledge and interest in gardening for wildlife
  • Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and supporting others to take action for wildlife
  • Availability and reliability on a weekly or other regular basis
  • Enthusiastic about wildlife and the work of the Trust
  • Willingness to work as part of a team
  • Willingness to work in accordance with all relevant Trust policies and procedures including Health & Safety, Safeguarding and Data Protection

Volunteer training and support

  • Induction training covering an introduction to the work of the Trust and information on our policies and procedures
  • Support from the Trust team to plan work and deliver gardening activities
  • Access to occasional training workshops as needed
  • Reasonable travel expenses can be claimed for travel to/from Grebe House

Anticipated time commitment:

  • This is flexible but we suggest 1-2 days per week with some seasonal variation
  • Regular support for weekly volunteer group
  • Caring for the garden will take priority but there may be opportunity to get involved in support for other HMWT activities
