What is a Learning and Engagement Volunteer?

 As a Learning and Engagement Volunteer you will be volunteering as part of a well-qualified and experienced team of staff and volunteers, delivering a wide variety of outdoor activities and environmental studies. As part of the National Trust, Brancaster Activity Centre offers active and engaging outdoor activities to residential schools as well as self-catering accommodation. The role is varied; including helping lead outdoor activities, helping with the day to day running of the centre, assisting with session development and representing us at events. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in outdoor learning, environmental education and visitor engagement with a well-respected conservation organisation.

  • Gain experience in developing and delivering outdoor adventurous activities and environmental education.
  • Receive all required training relevant to your role such as first aid.
  • Help create life-long memories and enable children to connect with nature
  • Gain understanding of the running of a busy learning programme at the National Trust and working with our qualified and dedicated team.
  • Develop a greater understanding of delivering activities to Key Stage 2.

What’s involved?

  • Help deliver outdoor learning, environmental education and visitor engagement with a well-respected organisation.
  • Contributing to the day to day running of the centre which will include cleaning, maintenance, marketing and administration tasks.
  • Ensuring our activity resources and equipment are kept to a high standard.
  • Developing teaching and display materials relevant to National Trust’s cause message.
  • Volunteer as part of a dynamic team of staff and volunteers.
  • Supporting public events alongside National Trust Staff.
  • Volunteer in compliance with National Trust’s working with children and young people guidelines, health and safety policy and National Trust Values and Behaviours.

  • Love being outside in all weathers and happy to get muddy.
  • Enthusiastic, motivated and looking to further their experience working with children.
  • Clear communicator who can be flexible and function well as part of team.
  • Looking for a detailed and immersive experience of the National Trust.
  • Interested in understanding how we care for our places at National Trust over time

Extra Information

  • We’ll help you get to know Brancaster, how you can help and how you will volunteer alongside the rest of the team – with induction and training
  • We provide equipment to be safe and confident in your role
  • We’ll cover agreed expenses for your travel between home and Brancaster (to be agreed in advance).
  • There is accommodation available in the form of a room within a shared cottage in Burnham Overy Staithe, if you need it to be able to undertake the role.

About the Learning and Engagement team (based at Brancaster Activity Centre)

BAC is part of the beautiful north Norfolk coast. The National Trust’s unique centre at Brancaster offers active and engaging outdoor activities to schools, combined with self-catering accommodation to the general public.

As well as resident school groups from February to November in term time, we also welcome school day visits, non-school groups and run public-facing events on the coast.

We have 4 full-time Learning and Engagement staff and our Centre Manager based here, along with a number of volunteers, the longest standing of whom has been with us for 20 years.
