Growing Communities is a new project in Breckland and West Norfolk! Garden Organic, together with Family Action Swaffham, are looking for Master Gardeners to support and encourage people and communities to grow food, whether this is at home, on windowsills or at community gardens.

The volunteer Master Gardener role aims to promote food growing in their local communities – such as through encouraging groups and individuals to begin growing food (e.g. school, residential homes), spreading the word through community events, giving talks, offering advice and running practical workshops etc. In return Master Gardener volunteers receive membership to Garden Organic, the chance to take part in informal training and workshops plus annual events, support and advice.

The role is for anyone with a passion for growing your own food, and a love of sharing your knowledge with others! You don't need to be an expert, but you'll need a couple of years experience of growing. Hours are flexible, and we look for around 30 hours/year. Free induction training weekends on Sat 22 & Sun 23nd February 2020 at the Discovery Centre, Kings Lynn. Timings 10am – 4pm both day, both lunch and travel expenses included.

An induction into the programme, including start up resources and manual, ideas for engaging with new growers and offering support, ideas and activities plus key principles for growing organically…including:

  • Building and maintaining soil health,
  • Encouraging biodiversity,
  • Using resources responsibly,
  • Avoiding using harmful chemicals,
  • Keeping a healthy growing area
  • Where to grow?
  • When to grow?
  • Challenges of organic growing

If you have good communication skills and a love for gardening then we would love to hear from you!
