Sectors: conservation & wildlife

Closing date: Friday, 28th February 2020   Closes today

We are looking for three voluntary Trainees who are eager to develop a career in conservation and would like to learn alongside our professional team in Buckinghamshire - two based at Meadow Farm near Bicester and one based at College Lake near Tring. Whether you are at the start of your career or looking for a new direction, becoming a Trainee with BBOWT will equip you with relevant experience and qualifications to take that next step.

As a trainee you will gain employer-valued practical experience of conservation techniques, ranging from scrub clearance and vegetation management to maintenance of site infrastructure and helping to manage our livestock. You will take part in a varied training programme, tailored to your role (including outdoor first aid certification and, for those electing to commit to 12 months, NPTC Chainsaw). You will have a dedicated mentor who will monitor your progress and help with personal development throughout your placement. Limited travel expenses are also available.

Applicants should have a keen interest in UK wildlife conservation, a good level of physical fitness, and be willing to supervise and lead volunteers. Relevant volunteering experience is desirable.

Wildlife Trainee (Conservation) South Buckinghamshire

Based out of College Lake, near Tring, you will join a skilled and knowledgeable team delivering conservation across our South Buckinghamshire reserves, which include beautiful woodland at Dancersend, wetland at Weston Turville Reservoir and chalk grassland at Yoesden. You will learn about the practical management of these habitats and how this benefits the rich diversity of species they host; including rare orchids, wildflowers, butterflies and birds. In addition to improving your skills in practical conservation and species identification, you will also gain experience leading volunteer groups, and have the opportunity to learn about conservation grazing techniques and the management of Trust livestock.

Wildlife Trainee (Conservation) North Buckinghamshire x2

Based out of Meadow Farm (OX25 1TW), you will join a skilled and knowledgeable team delivering a programme of works across our North Bucks reserves, which include Finemere and Whitecross Green Woods and the Upper River Ray Living Landscape. These reserves form a stronghold of nature in an area under increasing development pressure, and host a range of species including rare wading birds, butterflies, ancient woodland indicator plants and small mammals. In this post you will learn about and complete tasks for the practical management of woodland, species rich hay meadows and hedgerows, as well as wetland and lake sites. You will also improve your species identification skills, and develop your professional network and leadership skills.

Hours: A commitment of 3 days per week for 6 or 12 months is essential. Trainee days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8.30 am - 4.30 pm. Please note that these are voluntary positions.

Closing date: Friday 28th February 2020, 9am

Interviews: Friday 6th March 2020 at Meadow Farm, near Blackthorn, Bicester (OX25 1TW)

Start Date (this may be negotiable under special circumstances): Within one month of interview
