Sectors: marine conservation, environmental education

Closing date: Sunday, 26th January 2020   4 days left

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our Discovery Centre Team and assist with our outreach programme. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver memorable and inspiring activities for residents and visitors to Tobermory and the Isle of Mull.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
You will mainly be based in and around our Visitor Centre in Tobermory, volunteering for 5 days per week (Including one evening a week and occasional weekend). The role has three day structures:

Whale Trail Engagement (local): (2 days a week on average)

  • Collaborating with local whale trail sites to deliver headland watches and other outside engagement activities.
  • Running our Tobermory whale trail walks and watches starting from the centre.
  • Leading outside engagement such as beach cleans and outside talks.

Visitor Centre Engagement: (2 days a week including 1 evening on average)

  • Providing expert interpretation of the centre resources, our public work and the marine species of the Hebrides to a visiting public.
  • Helping visitors to contribute to citizen science though our ‘whale track’ app.
  • Leading the daily programme of activities in the centre including hosting and delivering talks, family workshops, and running our escape room game.

Visitor Centre Front of House: (1 day a week on overage)

  • Providing a warm welcome to our visitors and delivering high quality customer service.
  • Processing till payments, securing new supporters, and stock maintenance.
  • Answering questions on cetaceans, the Hebridean Whale trail, and taking bookings.

As part of your placement you will have the opportunity to take part in a survey on board HWDT’s research vessel Silurian, assisting our Biodiversity Officer and boat crew with the day-to-day delivery of our monitoring programme. This will involve living and working at sea alongside paying volunteers supporting them in gathering research data and contributing to on board life.

WHAT YOU WILL GET FROM THE PLACEMENT

  • A chance to get involved in the inner workings of a Marine NGO with active citizen science programmes, including the opportunity to assist on a cetacean survey.
  • Experience in delivering talks and hosting engagement events both from the Visitor Centre in Tobermory and from Hebridean Whale Trail sites around Mull.
  • Confidence communicating with a wide range of age groups and visitor demographics.
  • Opportunity to develop your own talks or organise activities or events.
  • Flexibility, with the possibility of additional experiences, tailored to the individual, incorporated into the programme on request, where available.
