This fantastic voluntary opportunity aims to support and develop individuals to help them gain a career in the environmental sector. Based on the Bideford Bay and Hartland Property, which sits within the Torridge Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and supports a diverse range of habitats, including SSSI Woodland, Culm Grassland, Salt Marsh and Heathland, amongst others. You will be supported by a very experienced Ranger team who are passionate about preserving our special places and improving the condition of the habitats under their care. You will have the opportunity to gain relevant training through our excellent North Devon Training Program, also through external providers as well as opportunities to volunteer across the North Devon Property.

What’s involved? 

  • As part of our Land, Outdoor and Nature vision you will have the opportunity to help the team carry out a diverse range of activities:    
  • Assist the Rangers in Practical countryside management tasks such as path & boundary maintenance, tree work, Livestock checks, biodiversity monitoring, habitat restoration and general maintenance.
  • Assist in finding more environmentally sustainable ways of working across the property, so that the property achieves its environmental targets.
  • Maintain good working relations with tenants and neighbours.
  • Assist with Wildlife monitoring across the properties to help us quantify the success of our land management strategy.
  • Assist (and potentially lead as you develop new skills) in the organisation, development and delivery of a wide range of visitor experiences across the property, focusing on the outdoor experience.
  • Assist (and potentially lead as you develop new skills) in the delivery of educational activities across the property.
  • To aid your personal development we offer internal and external training. This will include National Trust in-house training and some external courses such as First Aid, Off-Road driving and Brush-Cutter.
  • To help you develop within this voluntary role you will be guided and mentored by the Bideford Bay Ranger Team. There will also be opportunities to volunteer and train across the North Devon Property.
  • As this is an immersive role, volunteers have historically spent up to 4 days a week becoming fully involved in every aspect of the Rangers day to day activities.

This role will suit you if you are …

  • Over 18 with a clean driving license.
  • Passionate about nature and the outdoors.
  • Looking to gain the experience required for a job in Countryside Management/Nature Conservation.
  • Looking for a detailed and immersive experience of the National Trust or the sector
  • Interested in volunteering for up to 12 months
