amy.hannan@wwt.org.uk 07584171420 Amy Hannan

Sectors: conservation & wildlife, ecology

Closing date: Friday, 3rd January 2020

WWT Cambodia has three areas of focus, the first is the reserve management support of two key protected wetlands in Cambodia; Boeung Prek Lapouv & Anlung Pring Protected Landscape. Second is wetland education and awareness raising on a local and national scale, and thirdly is providing integrated conservation interventions, which work with the local communities to help them benefit from the wetlands while conserving them.

Anlung Pring Community Based Ecotourism (AP CBET) site is one of these integrated conservation interventions. WWT is working on an exciting project with 55 local community members living around Anlung Pring Protected Landscape who formed a tourism group, to protect their beautiful wetland by operating a local tourism service (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1KVrdTPWyE). It helps them improving their own livelihoods while also raising funds for the conservation of Anlung Pring.

This opportunity is most suitable for those who are looking for some hands-on rural experience, or for those professionals who are thinking of temporarily contributing to rural-conservation work in a developing country.

Who will be responsible for your role? WWT Cambodia’s Technical Officer

Please check AP CBET’s website for more information about their operation: www.mekongcrane.com

How much time will it take? December 2019 to June 2020

What will you be doing?

  • Support AP CBET and WWT to implement the new marketing strategy.
  • Work with the CBET team members to increase the quality of their services. It includes regular training and recap events.
  • Help WWT in developing attractive content and innovative ideas to promote AP CBET (photos, videos, texts).
  • Help AP CBET team to improve their operation standards and provide excellent visiting experience to the tourists.
  • Help revising and updating AP CBET’s documents and procedures.

Who are we looking for?

You will enjoy this opportunity if:

  • You are passionate about nature, wetlands and conservation.
  • You enjoy experiencing a different style of life in Cambodia’s rural areas (with basic life comfort).
  • You have plans and goals in your professional life.
  • You enjoy submersing yourself into a new culture and assimilating into the local community.
  • You possess coordination and facilitation skills.
  • You are an innovative person.
  • You have a good knowledge of media and digital marketing.
  • Preferably you come to AP with your partner, or make sure that you join social activities in and outside AP.

How will you benefit?

  • This is an excellent opportunity to volunteer at an internationally important wetland site.
  • You will have many opportunities to work on your creative and innovative ecotourism marketing and community development ideas.
  • The sense of reward by helping the community to get their new marketing plan done.
  • Accommodation and food expenses might be partially provided at Anlung Pring.

General notes:

  • The exact hours you are able to contribute will be discussed prior to placement, but as a tourism business the AP CBET is running 7 days a week. We expect you to help them at least 5 days a week.
  • There are three villages surrounding Anlung Pring Protected Landscape. You will be staying at a homestay in one of these villages.

A homestay is a type of accommodation, where a local family opens up their home for you to stay at. This is an incredible way to get an insight into Cambodians life in rural areas, and to experience it for yourself. Of course life in rural Cambodia is not as comfortable as your country or even urban Cambodia, so don’t expect all the mod cons of a modern hotel.
