An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Volunteer Warden at South Woodham Fen. At Woodham Fen you can witness the unusual habitat in Essex where there is a natural transition from saltmarsh to grassland, bringing with it an interesting array of plant and wildlife species. Volunteers need a willingness to be outside, a keen eye for spotting change and potential problems on the reserves and the ability to be self-motivated.

Divided by the railway line, the southern side of the reserve is saltmarsh that transitions into rough grassland. The land was originally donated in the 12th century by the Lords of the Manor to the community to graze animals. Now, Essex Wildlife Trust works in partnership with South Woodham Town Council to manage the nature reserve, which lies within a much larger area of common land.

On a sunny spring or summers day you will find Common Lizards and Slow Worms basking in the warmth, along with an abundance of invertebrates. Due to the saltmarsh habitat, a wide range of saltmarsh plants can be found here, including the small colourful flowers of Slender Birdsfoot Trefoil and Grass Vetchling.

As volunteer Warden for Woodham Fen you will:

  • Assist in the high quality management of Essex Wildlife reserves by regularly visiting a reserve and inspecting the reserve.
  • Communicate effectively with the Trust’s staff about any issues with the reserve.
  • Deal with problems as appropriate; talking to people who are conducting improper activities on the reserve, clearing litter or reporting issues to your supervisor.
  • Be independent and conduct inspections when agreed without prompting from a supervisor.
  • Ensure volunteering activities are conducted in a safe manner, ensuring that you adhere to relevant health and safety policies especially lone working policies where relevant.
  • To uphold the values of the Essex Wildlife Trust.
