Volunteer Opportunity

Community Ambassador

An excellent opportunity to spread the word about Northumberland Wildlife Trust in your local community! If you are willing to speak up, comfortable talking to people about wildlife, raising the profile of the Trust and promoting our events and visitor centres, then this is the role for you.

Why Northumberland Wildlife Trust needs your help

NWT’s aim is to bring people closer to nature so that they learn to understand, value and protect it, especially as climate change is threatening our very existence. Most people live in towns so we need much closer relationships with these communities if we want things to change. That’s why we need volunteers like you to help us be the agents of change.

Activities:

Don’t worry if you don’t want to do everything – you can work with friends in a team or only take on what you feel comfortable with! You can also make this role your own – if you have additional ideas then we’re happy to give them a try.

  • Talking to people in your community about us (residents’ association, local groups, your local magazine)
  • Visiting places (doctors, dentists, shops, libraries) and leave magazines or leaflets, put up posters
  • Representing NWT at local events and gatherings (fetes, allotment shows, sports events)
  • Organising local fundraisers (coffee mornings, challenges and sports events)
  • Leading volunteer teams, e.g. putting leaflets through doors
  • Visiting local businesses, giving information about corporate membership
  • Organising visits to schools to do assemblies on climate change and wildlife
  • Raising our profile on social media by sharing stories

What skills, qualities and experience do you need?

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed people who like a bit of variety. You will need to be:

  • friendly, helpful and good with people - you’ll be out meeting everyone
  • a great talker – you know how to put a convincing argument in an engaging way!
  • active – we need you to be out and about
  • competent with social networking
  • enthusiastic about wildlife

If you’ve been a parish councillor, trustee, have great networks, or represented your area on the residents’ committee/neighbourhood watch, we’d love to hear about it, but don’t worry if you haven’t, come along and help out!

What might you get out of being involved?

  • Be part of ‘saving the planet’ by building a grass roots movement for change to protect the natural world
  • Join an enthusiastic team to find new friends, make a difference and have fun
  • Develop your communications skills and meet new people on your travels
  • Learn about wildlife

How much time will you be expected to give?

Usually 0.5 - 1 day per week but you can fit the work around your other commitments

Other information

  • Must be over 18.
  • Full training and handbook will be given
  • Vehicle mileage or public transport costs will be refunded
  • You can attend other NWT volunteer training and social events such as Volfest our annual celebration day

This role was inspired by the 2020 Vision project, which is funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund thanks to National Lottery players.
