k.p.lamers@rug.nl Koosje Lamers

Sectors: ecology, conservation & wildlife

Closing date: Saturday, 1st February 2020

We are seeking two volunteers to help us collect breeding and behavioural data in a population of pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) in south Sweden next spring 2020 (estimated start April 1st 2020 – end of June). This population of pied flycatchers is monitored for Conservation Ecology research by the University of Groningen (Netherlands). Our research investigates whether differences between populations in life history traits are determined by genes or environment. For this, we have created an experimental “common garden” of wild birds of different genetic origins. Arrival timing, timing of breeding, reproduction, migration timing and wintering sites are all measured through nestbox monitoring, adult catching, and geolocator tracking. The volunteer positions will be embedded in an international research team consisting of a PhD and MSc students. Duties include intensive nest monitoring, bird handling (ringing, measuring), mist netting, behavioral observations (identification by colour rings), setting up experimental equipment, data entry and data management.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a BSc in Biology or a related field and preferably have proven experience with bird handling and/or behavioural observations in the field. Candidates should be highly motivated, willing to work independently, well organized, and a valid drivers’ license is a plus. Field work will involve long hours and work in the weekend while still maintaining a positive attitude. We will provide housing in the lovely field site in Skåne, Sweden. Non-EU applicants should make sure that they eligible for extended stay in Europe.

Contact

Applications will be accepted until February 2020 or until the position is filled and should include (1) a statement that highlights relevant experience, and (2) a short resume or CV and contact information for references (up to 2). Send applications to: Koosje Lamers (Email: k.p.lamers@rug.nl). For more information about the lab visit: (URL: www.rug.nl/research/institute-evolutionary-life-sciences/ceg/).
