Do you want to help local families get out on their bikes and explore Edinburgh’s quiet ways and paths? We're looking for a patient, well-organised, enthusiastic volunteer to help promote and run our programme of family-friendly bike rides in the city.

We are looking for a volunteer to co-organise, plan, promote and run our programme of family-friendly bike rides.

You'll be joining our friendly volunteer group and you'll receive training and support from Sustrans staff. Edinburgh Family Rides are short leisurely trips to a family-friendly venue or place to play.

Why become a Sustrans volunteer?

This role will give you the opportunity to meet new people, gain experience working with families, and develop your promotion skills and cycle ride leader skills.

You will also get to know Edinburgh’s wonderful off-road paths, and get regular opportunities to network with other volunteers.

What does a Sustrans volunteer ride leader do?

As a volunteer ride leader you will:

  • plan a series of family bike rides with a fellow volunteer ride organiser and your staff supervisor
  • attend Cycling Scotland Cycle Ride Leader training
  • support or lead rides following Sustrans’ guidance
  • plan suitable routes for group rides in the local area
  • organise and promote a series of bike rides
  • provide the staff supervisor with a completed risk assessment and plan
  • promote the ride locally with support from your staff supervisor
  • ride the planned route ahead of when the ride takes place to check for any changes to conditions and update the risk assessment accordingly
  • brief and sign in participants
  • carry out relevant checks before the ride sets off.

What we're looking for

We’re looking for people who are:

  • confident and experienced riding a bike
  • have the ability to inspire others and make sure everyone in the group feels welcome and included
  • patient and can encourage people and help them gain confidence
  • have knowledge of bike maintenance (ride leaders don’t carry out bike maintenance - they advise participants how to check their own bikes before the ride sets off)
  • able to read maps, plan routes, and complete necessary paperwork
  • well organised and good at planning.

Good communications and promotional skills are an asset but your staff supervisor will provide training and support with this.

Time commitment

 As a guide:

  • a half-day initially to attend induction and one-day Cycle Ride Leader training course
  • one to two days per year to attend training events, including mandatory ride leader training
  • one ride takes up to one and a half days of initial preparation and delivery
  • typically ride leaders will organise/deliver/assist 4-12 events a year
  • one day per month planning and organising the overall series of rides and linking up with relevant partner organisations and managing promotion with support from your staff supervisor.

Note: For a repeated ride, the preparation time will be reduced as the volunteer will have already planned the route and carried out necessary checks.

Assistant ride leaders may only be required to support on the day of the event.

Training and support offered

  • One-day Cycling Scotland Cycle Ride Leader Training
  • One-day First Aid in Sport training
  • One-day Trail and Roadside Repairs training
  • Training and mentoring with ride planning and risk assessments
  • Training and support with ride promotion
  • Ongoing support from your staff supervisor.
