Why we want you

Your role will be to support our practical conservation staff on the Weald Reserves in East Sussex and Kent, based near Tunbridge Wells. You will focus on habitat management, reserve maintenance, wildlife surveys and public engagement events. You will be helping the RSPB to restore vital lowland heathland at Broadwater Warren and to manage ancient woodland and wild flower meadows at Fore Wood and Tudeley Woods.

Regular duties will include:

  • Assisting with the creation of coppice plots and the development of woodland rides.
  • Assisting with managing lowland heath.
  • Scrub management.
  • Making repairs to our site infrastructure such as benches, gates and fences.
  • Removing invasive species.
  • Leading volunteer work parties.
  • Maintaining reserves' equipment.
  • Taking part in wildlife surveys.
  • Helping with guided walks.
  • Inductions/relevant training for each task will be given beforehand and ongoing support provided by the warden and assistant warden

The skills you need 


  • Can commit to three days a week for six months
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability to work proactively and to show initiative.
  • Organised with attention to detail
  • Confident meeting new people and representing the charity
  • Ability to work on own and within a team
  • Prepared to get stuck in to a range of practical tasks, some of which require full days outdoors in all weather and can involve lifting equipment, plus carrying goods, and long spells walking
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn new skills


  • Some DIY, basic outdoor skills or knowledge of machinery would be advantageous, although full training will be given

RSPB runs an inclusive volunteer internship scheme, so whether you have just graduated, finished your A Levels and looking for voluntary experience in your gap year or you are looking for a change of career paths we welcome your application. However, we do ask that you meet the following requirements:

You must:

  • Be 18 years old or over
  • Have a full clean driving licence
  • Have achieved A-levels or equivalent
  • Be confident using MS Word, Excel, Outlook

Your time 

Minimum commitment: 3 days a week
Duration: 6 months (minimum)
Period: Mid-August 2019 - March 2020

Notes Please note that NO accommodation is offered with this internship as it is a non-residential placement. All the training necessary and background information will be provided and since you'll be giving up your time, it's only fair that we offer to re-imburse your travel expenses (up to 25 miles).
