Objective of the job

To assist the River Project Manager in the delivery and development of catchment based projects to help meet the objectives of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), water environment projects which might focus on aquatic species, water quality and river restoration.

Key results expected

  • Develop and maintain relationships with organisations and individuals who are concerned with managing riparian land in both urban and rural situations.
  • Provide a range of support functions which will help with water quality assessment and riparian ecology monitoring.
  • Engage with external partners and community groups in relation to project development and delivery
  • Help develop ‘warm leads’ for future river and catchment projects in Shropshire.

Key tasks

  • Work closely with the rest of the Rivers Team
  • Liaise with other SWT teams and departments, external partners and others operating within the catchment areas and attend team/steering group meetings as appropriate.
  • Assist with work programmes being delivered by the Rivers Team within Shropshire.
  • Help prepare consent and permission applications for project works as required.
  • Deliver/Assist in survey work/small scale events/demonstration days to help showcase current work and best practice river restoration techniques.

This placement post is suited to someone who is able to communicate information in a straightforward and accessible manner to a broad range of partners and co-workers. They will be open to training and self-learning to allow full participation in the conservation of the water environment.

Some experience of land management advice will be useful. A tactful approach, good diplomatic skills and the ability to research so communication skills and general approach are more important than specific qualifications. The placement post-holder will fully supported by the River Project Manager.

An understanding of riparian habitats and in-stream improvements, or experience of Sustainable Urban Drainage Schemes would be useful.

Contract management skills are highly desirable though not essential, as are reasonable IT skills in MS Office and digital mapping.

A qualification in a land management related subject and practical experience would be an advantage.

A full driving licence is essential.

About the team

The post sits within the River Projects Team (which leads on the Trust’s rivers and catchment management activity), line managed by the River Projects Manager. You will be part of a small team of project officers that work across Shropshire and Telford. As with all Trust jobs you will be part of a team and add your expertise to those of other specialists who can support you with advice on our wider work.

Working hours, holidays etc.

You will work from our HQ in Shrewsbury.

You will be working all year round, indoors and outdoors in most weathers.

You will be entitled to annual leave based on your hours worked, plus a pro rata allocation of public holidays.

Salary: This role is voluntary and is designed as a placement opportunity.
