Wildlife Trainee (Conservation) College Lake, Buckinghamshire

Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT)

Volunteer • Part Time

Sectors: conservation & wildlife

Closing date: Tuesday, 28th May 2019

College Lake is a vibrant visitor and education centre, based around a flooded chalk quarry that is an outstanding nature reserve and home to an amazing range of wild plants and animals. We are looking for a voluntary Trainee who is eager to develop a new career in conservation and would like to learn alongside our professional team.

The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust is a membership-based voluntary organisation, managing 90 nature reserves, influencing land management and educating and encouraging all sectors of the community to care for local wildlife.

If you want to work in the environmental sector but lack the experience to land your first job, a Trainee position with BBOWT may be just what you need. As a volunteer Trainee you will gain employer-valued practical experience of conservation techniques ranging from fencing and tree felling to species survey and livestock management. You will take part in a comprehensive training programme, tailored to your role (including first aid and NPTC chainsaw certification) and have a dedicated mentor who will monitor your progress and help with personal development throughout your placement. Limited travel expenses are available. Over 80% of our previous Conservation Trainees have jobs in the industry.

Based at College Lake, near Tring, you will join a skilled and knowledgeable team and learn about the practical management of a range of habitats at this wonderfully diverse site. You will have the opportunity to develop essential practical skills on wetlands, chalk grassland, farmland, woodland, fen and scrub habitat. College Lake is also a busy site with a thriving visitor centre and an education centre, meaning this role gives a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience of visitor engagement, an essential skill in modern conservation work.

Applicants should have a keen interest in UK wildlife conservation, a good level of physical fitness, and be willing to supervise and lead volunteers. Relevant volunteering or work experience is desirable.

A commitment of 3 days per week for 6-12 months is essential. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8.30am - 4.30pm. An additional commitment of one weekend day per month will also be required with time given off in lieu during the week.
