Why do you need me?

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic volunteer to support our Digital PR and Communications Teams with a range of digital marketing and press activities. Our digital channels are a key part of our communication toolkit and an important way for people to engage with us as an organisation. Your work will directly help us communicate with our followers, supports, community and industry on a range of topics by responding to questions/comments, helping us engage in online conversations and proactively communicating all areas of our work.

About the Digital PR and Communications Teams

Collectively, we are a small team with a focus on raising the profile and influence of the Soil Association. We achieve this by;

  • Proactively communicating our role as a leader in transforming the way we eat and farm and care for the natural world.
  • Reacting to news/social media content about our key focus areas, supporting where appropriate and warmly providing research backed evidence and alternative viewpoints where necessary.
  • Seeking out opportunities online to contribute to conversations or influence discussion either on social media channels or via guest blogs in strategically located forums
  • Influencing Government, businesses, policy makers and others directly, and through content and tone, present SA as an organisation with significant influence
  • Engaging with and supporting a growing community of supporters/followers who advocate for the charity and help us spread our message.

What activities will I be involved in?

  • Writing copy and content for a range of digital channels including website and social media
  • Creating assets such as infographics, and selecting and editing images for use in online communication
  • Undertaking analytical work of our online activity using reporting tools on social media and our social media platform, Hootsuite
  • Helping to monitor engagement across our social media channels and where appropriate responding, using the Soil Associations brand guidelines and Tone of Voice
  • Social listening. We do this by listening to the conversations on social media channels relating to our key areas of work and engaging where appropriate and flagging internally when it may be of interest to our policy and standards teams.

What skills do I need?

You’re organised, creative and happy to get stuck in on a range of tasks. You’re interested in shaping or expanding your communications and marketing skills to help raise the profile and influence of the Soil Association.

Useful skills include:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft systems, particularly Word and Excel
  • Desirable – experience of using Social Media Channels and website management systems
  • Desirable – Creative copywriting experience, whether that’s blogs, press releases or for social media
  • Desirable – Photo editing/design skills for creating digital assets.

What are the benefits for me?

This is a great role for someone seeking experience in a fast-paced PR and communications team, interested in gaining experience for a marketing career, or looking to uplift existing communications skills in digital channels.

You will:

  • Gain hands-on experience of working in a charity marketing team, with a specific focus on Digital PR
  • Have opportunities to engage in all the other areas of the Soil Association’s work through liaison with teams across the organisation
  • Receive a written reference when you finish volunteering with us

How much time should I offer?

It would be great if you could commit to two days a week but just let us know how much time you have to spare. We’re looking for someone to start before the end of March, initially for a three month period, but with the opportunity to continue.

Where will I be based?

You will be based at our Head Office in Bristol: Spear House, 51 Victoria Street, Bristol BS1 6AD

Is there an induction and training?

We will provide a full induction with opportunities to learn about the work of the Soil Association. You will get ongoing support and supervision from Dan Morrell, our Digital PR Manager.

Will my expenses be paid?

We reimburse expenses within agreed guidelines which should cover your travel and lunch.

What’s the next step?

Please submit your CV and a covering letter telling us why you would like to volunteer with us, to Dan, by 26th March 2019.
