An opportunity to gain an excellent all-round experience of working on a RSPB nature reserve.

3 days per week - 9am to 5.12

Minimum 6 months, maximum 12 months

You'll gain valuable work experience, develop new skills and learn how one of Europe's largest conservation charities is run. You'll also get:

  • Excellent all-round experience of working on a RSPB nature reserve.
  • Qualifications in the use of machinery and power tools such as brushcutter, 4x4 and pesticide application (depending on seasonal needs).
  • Training such as membership recruitment, social media, safeguarding, people engagement, Health and Safety including risk assessment and specialist in-house computer applications e.g.. Merlin.
  • An insider knowledge of the RSPB and conservation issues.
  • A chance to network with regional staff and explore possible career paths, both conservation and visitor related, including access to the internal job vacancies.
  • Experience of working in a team, leading other volunteers, and planning workdays.

Doing an internship will not guarantee you a job with the RSPB.

Our internships are designed to offer work experience. However, doing an internship does not, unfortunately, guarantee future employment with the RSPB. Interns are welcome to apply for our paid vacancies, but for obvious reasons, an intern would need to have proven themselves in their current role before their volunteering experience will assist an application for a paid post.

This role is designed to get the best experience in ALL sides of reserve management, maximising the range and number of jobs you'll be able to apply for. You'll be part of the team doing practical day-to-day management tasks out on the reserve as well as assisting the Warden with visitor operations on site and promoting the reserve.

It gives you the chance to work with people who are as passionate about wildlife as you are, making new friends and immersing yourself into the life of a nature reserve.

Skills needed:

Essential:

  • Enthusiasm for the role
  • An interest in conservation and natural history
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Excellent people and communication skills
  • Approachable personality
  • A full driving licence is also required for this role due to the location of the Ribble Sites.

Desirable – if you've not got these, talk to us anyway as they're not essential:

  • Some previous experience of practical work
  • Previous experience/understanding of customer service and/or marketing
  • Volunteering experience.

RSPB runs an inclusive volunteer internship scheme, so whether you have just graduated, finished your A Levels and looking for voluntary experience in your gap year or you are looking for a change of career paths we welcome your application.
