South Walney Nature Reserve, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria

Volunteer • Full or Part Time

Sectors: conservation & wildlife, ecology

Closing date: Tuesday, 26th February 2019   5 days left

Cumbria Wildlife Trust is the only voluntary organisation devoted solely to the conservation of the wildlife and wild places of Cumbria.

We are offering an exciting opportunity to an undergraduate student reading an ecology, wildlife or conservation related degree, to spend a sandwich placement with Cumbria Wildlife Trust, based at our South Walney Nature Reserve.

This residential volunteer placement will give you the unique opportunity to develop conservation skills and knowledge across many of the Trust’s reserves.

Although the precise details of the placement will vary, the successful student will assist the warden with the running of a suite of nature reserves in the South West of the county based from South Walney, whilst gaining valuable, worthwhile experience in practical conservation and ecological tasks, with a particular emphasis on practical work including infrastructure maintenance, habitat and species monitoring and management and visitor management and engagement.

Full training will be given to carry out a range of reserve tasks including ecological surveys, monitoring, practical site management and facilities maintenance.

It is expected that the placement will start late April/early May 2019 and the student will work four days per week and remain in post for at least nine months to enable them to fulfil the requirements of their degree.

The student will live on site full time in shared accommodation for the duration of the placement and as such is available outside of normal working hours, much to the benefit of the reserve. Regular evening and weekend work is expected as part of the placement. Due to the nature of the site an independent and self-reliant style of working is required.

A training bursary of £2500 is available for this role as well as the accommodation package.

To apply please send a brief CV and a covering letter outlining what you would like to gain from the placement and what skills you can bring to it, by email to or by post to Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Plumgarths, Crook Road, Kendal, Cumbria, LA8 8LX.

The deadline for applications is 10.00am on Tuesday 26 February 2019.

Please see our website  for the full role description.
