Isle of May National Nature Reserve Volunteer Role Description

What’s involved?

Scottish Natural Heritage is looking for volunteers to assist us with 3 areas of work 1) visitor management, enhancing the 12,000 visitors experience by explaining the wildlife spectacle, 2) Species monitoring and population counts especially of ground nesting birds including Arctic Terns, 3) practical maintenance of the reserve including habitat management and basic maintenance tasks,

Start mid-April to mid-August 2017 but length of placement and starting date can be discussed (short-term volunteer opportunities are available)

Who with?

You will volunteer with the Isle of May NNR staff team and a number of volunteers.

What will the experience provide?

Fancy a unique island experience? This is a chance of a lifetime opportunity to live and work on this special seabird island. We’ll provide you with training, ongoing support from our NNR team, field equipment and we will be able to lend you waterproofs. We can offer accommodation (not food) and will pay for some travel including the boat to the island. Food is purchased; cooked and eaten communally.

The skills you need

You will need to be at least 18 years old. You'll be personable, approachable, enthusiastic, a good communicator, and have excellent spoken English. You’ll need to be able to fit into a small island community and to work in a team or on your own. You’ll have a strong interest in conservation, a good knowledge of Scotland’s natural heritage and lots of enthusiasm for the Isle of May. You’ll be physically fit and have a responsible attitude to health and safety, complying with procedures designed to keep you and others safe. You’ll be willing to work outdoors in all weathers, keen to learn and adaptable.
