Northumberland National Park host the staff that look after the Hadrian’s Wall Path (HWP) National Trail. The National Trail is an 84 mile coast to coast route following the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall with the spectacular central section running through Northumberland National Park. We are offering a short term placement with an emphasis on managing public rights of way for individuals aged 16-25 with an interest in pursuing a career in the environmental/countryside sector.

Successful applicants will be given training and development opportunities by working with the Hadrian’s Wall Path (HWP) National Trail staff to undertake a range of access related tasks including: surveying; practical maintenance projects; working with volunteers, and; engaging with the public. Working with the Trail Ranger and other National Park staff as appropriate, placements will develop on the job skills in managing and maintaining Public Rights of Way (PRoW) with the added dimension that the HWP is set within a National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The purpose of the placement is to help young people gain an understanding and practical experience of what goes into managing a National Trail within a sensitive environmental setting, balancing the needs to conserve the special environmental and cultural qualities of the area whilst promoting public access and enjoyment of those qualities.

The placement will involve the individual attending 10 days over a 3 month period. The first of these days will be an introduction/induction to the National Trail and the National Park. Other works covered will include:

  • Public Right of Way (PRoW) work – surveying and waymarking;
  • Practical work – maintenance of the trail surface and infrastructure;
  • Out and about with the Hadrian’s Wall Volunteers on patrols or practical projects;
  • Work with specialist staff, including Archaeologist, Farming Team and Access Officer;
  • Public engagement throughout the World Heritage Site.
