People Enjoying Nature Volunteers

People Enjoying Nature (PEN) is a an outreach project which will offer supported activity sessions in the Pendle Hill landscape to individuals and groups who are dealing with mental health and social isolation issues. This project provides transport to those participants, and activity takes place across the PHLP area. Activity may include practical conservation tasks, creative tasks in the landscape, archaeology, sessions with artists etc., which will link in with other PHLP projects or seasonal activity.

This project is working in partnership with NHS Lancashire Care East Lancashire Community Restart. Community Restart is a forward thinking service that is dedicated to improving quality of life, promoting opportunities and improving the outcomes for people across Lancashire. They work in partnership with people who access the service, careers, mental health specialists, employment providers and environmental agencies to provide the opportunities and community connections for individuals to improve their health and well-being. They support individuals who have mental health issues and/or suffers from social isolation both on an individual basis and by setting up and supporting groups and projects in local communities.

This role involves:

  • Supporting the Community Engagement Officer with the preparation and delivery of landscape and heritage based activity sessions to PEN participants.
  • Supporting participants and fellow volunteers throughout the sessions, offering help and advice when necessary
  • Maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Assisting with resource creation, social media promotion and activity planning if wanted.
  • Working with other volunteers in accordance with the health and safety policy, safeguarding and other volunteering polies.

This role will suit people who:

  • Are aged 18 or above
  • Have good interpersonal skills and are able to work with people from all walks of life
  • Are reliable, friendly and approachable
  • Have empathy with those who may experience poor mental health or social isolation.
  • Would like to learn new skills and develop their knowledge.
  • Understand the benefits of Ecotherapy, and the benefits that taking part in activities outdoors can have on health and well-being.

Location of volunteer activity:

Office based in LCC Offices, off Pimlico Road, BB7 2BW (next to Clitheroe Register Office). The PEN sessions take place across the PHLP area, however most take place in sites such as Spring Wood, Clarion House (Roughlee), Barley.

Time commitment:

The PEN sessions take place in three 6 week activity blocks over the summer between March and October and 4 stand-alone sessions from November to February. Most activity sessions take place on the same day and time each week for the 6 week blocks (e.g. every Thursday afternoon from 1pm-4pm). PEN volunteers will be expected to volunteer with as many sessions as possible.

Mental Health Awareness training will be provided, along with other general training opportunities that may involve specific activities (and link in with the Pendle Hill Volunteers training opportunities)

Out-of-pocket travel costs, following the Volunteer Expenses Policy.
