Do you want to make a difference to your local community? Do you love being outdoors? Do you enjoy working with people? 

We are looking for volunteers to help people use and enjoy their local green spaces, including the Pump Room Gardens and other parks in Warwick District. You will assist with the planning and delivery of events and activities in parks and open spaces, produce communications and publicity, support school workshops, manage community booking and assist with project administration.

Background

Warwick District Council manages many stunning green spaces across Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth, including the ‘Spa Gardens’ of Leamington, consisting of Victoria Park, the Pump Room Gardens and Jephson Gardens. The Green Spaces team is keen to further its community engagement work through communications, events, activities and supporting the work of local groups. We are currently undertaking a Heritage Lottery funded restoration programme at the Pump Room Gardens, which will see activities, performances and events happening in and around the restored bandstand. By joining our team, you can make meaningful contributions to these projects, help the community explore their local heritage, further the development of our beautiful green spaces, and gain new experiences and skills.

Role Summary

We are looking for volunteers to support the delivery and development of our community engagement work, with a particular focus on the Pump Room Gardens and wider Spa Gardens.

Main Duties may include: 

  • Supporting the planning and delivery of community-focused activities in our green spaces, particularly in relation to our activity plan for the Pump Room Gardens
  • Supporting the planning and delivery of public events, activities at events, and performances, including acting as stewards at our higher profile events
  • Assisting with the implementation of our Communications Plan, including contributing towards our monthly newsletter, press releases and social media output
  • Supporting the delivery of formal learning sessions with primary aged children and informal learning sessions with younger children, and assist with learning resources and facilities
  • Directly delivering aspects of our community engagement work, which could include running activity or storytelling sessions, giving talks, coordinating outreach activities or delivering guided walks
  • Working positively with people from all sectors of the community, including children, young people, families and older people
  • Attending inductions, progress meetings, training sessions and other meetings where relevant
  • Working in a safe and secure environment, referring to relevant risk assessments as needed, and to adhere to all relevant legislation and council policies and procedures including health and safety, safeguarding, equal opportunities and data protection.

Additional duties may include:

  • Processing bookings from community groups, schools and individuals for activities/ sessions/ performance events
  • Contributing towards research, planning, consultation, resource development, monitoring and evaluation for our community engagement work
  • Contributing towards the development of interpretation materials and signage for green spaces across the district
  • Mentoring and supporting fellow volunteers and assist with the development of our volunteering programme

Experience and Skills required

Essential:

  • Good communication skills and experience of communicating effectively with a wide variety of people from across the community
  • Ability to work within a team setting with a variety of different people
  • Reliability and a willingness to work flexibly around the needs of the Green Spaces team
  • Ability to follow instructions safely and effectively
  • Commitment to the importance of diversity and equality of opportunities
  • Enthusiasm for green spaces and their benefits
  • Basic IT skills – internet and email

Desirable:

  • Experience of working with volunteers or community groups
  • Experience of working at, or helping to plan or coordinate, community events or activities
  • Experience and knowledge of working with children, young people or family groups
  • Ability to effectively use computer packages (Word, Excel), internet and email (Outlook)
  • Interest in or knowledge of local heritage or wildlife
  • Interest in or knowledge of performing arts and related logistics eg. lighting, sound
