We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about engaging children with nature and are happy to deliver outdoor activities to classes of up to 30 children (after a period of training) in all but extreme weather. You would be leading school visits to predominately primary aged children from March to October, term time only. There may also be opportunities to volunteer with family events during school holidays but formal education will be the main focus of the role.

You will be working outside and on the go all day as part of a small but busy education team inspiring children of all abilities about wildlife through practical, hands-on activities such as pond dipping, investigating mini-beasts and seasonal sensory walks. Good communication skills and enthusiasm are essential and some experience of working with children would be helpful. Being willing to learn new skills with a resourceful and flexible approach will make you a valuable member of the team.

Tasks will include:

  • Leading outdoor environmental education workshops to children (4-11 years).
  • Inspiring children about wildlife and facilitating their learning during activities.
  • Assisting with equipment and resource maintenance as necessary.
  • Assisting with promoting our education programme to primary schools.

What’s in it for you?

  • Fantastic work experience opportunity for careers in environmental education and teaching.
  • Induction to the RSPB and Old Moor.
  • Training in workshop delivery, safeguarding and relevant H&S.
  • RSPB uniform and name badge.
  • Travel expenses (up to 25 miles each way).
  • Supportive environment.

Your time commitment: A minimum of one fixed day per fortnight.

Period: This is a seasonal role with the majority of volunteering taking place within term time between March and October.

Duration: Ongoing.
