Background

This is a focused work placement, where you will be expected to take on significant levels of responsibility including the development of a marine outreach program. The role also places you within a small but tightly knit team of staff and volunteers that make up a Wildlife Trust with the opportunity to learn and develop a range of skills.

Living Seas is the Alderney Wildlife Trust’s (AWT) marine research and conservation programme. The AWT’s outreach programme if focused on engaging the public with island’s natural and cultural environment and the Trust’s work.

This role placement is focused on both the delivery, infrastructure and development of the Living Sea’s and outreach programme. The successful applicant will operate under the line management of the Trust’s CEO and the Living Seas Coordinator and alongside the Trust’s Marine Ecologist (Ramsar) and People and Wildlife Officer.

Alderney is the third largest of the Channel Islands. The AWT promotes the conservation of Alderney’s terrestrial and marine wildlife and associated habitats. Alongside its practical conservation and ecological research work the Trust engages with a significant part of the island’s community and thousands of visitors to the island each year.

The main Living Seas duties (approx. 20hrs/p.w):

  • Leading on the Alderney Living Seas 2019 Programme theme: Inspiring People. This includes running a number of marine citizen science surveys (such as: marine mammal surveys, Shoresearch and Alderney Snorkel Seasearch Group), developing new public outreach/ engagement activities and supporting academic studies (for example visiting students). This includes further developing programme infrastructure, recruitment, training and review.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of marine educational events, such as:
  • Rock-pooling/ Shoresearch events
  • Snorkel tours
  • Kayak tours
  • Other marine based events linked to the island’s school, playschool and other groups.
  • Supporting the Living Seas’s Coordinator and Marine Ecologist on Living Seas and Ramsar programmes

Main Duties Outreach Officer (approx. 20hrs/p.w):

  • Working with the appointed staff on the development of infrastructure to deliver the outreach programme including establishment of appropriate guide accreditation, training and review
  • Delivery of walks, tours, talks and activities
  • Assisting in other aspects of the operation of the AWT as required.

Person Specification

The role requires:

  • A self-motivated individual looking to deliver against set goals.
  • A marine ecology background.
  • Presentation/public outreach/speaking skills.
  • Full, clean driving licence

Desirable experience

  • The ability to adapt quickly to changing situations.
  • Survey data entry and report writing skills.
  • Working closely with existing staff and volunteers, demonstrating that you can act as part of a team.

The structure of the work placement will be as follows: 

  • The placement includes two return flights (approx. total value £440) or sailings to the UK (one for every 6 months of placement completed).
  • Free accommodation at the AWT’s Essex Farm Field Centre (inclusive of private room, wi-fi access, shared kitchen, sitting-room and office facilities)
  • The person undertaking this role will act as a full-time placement member of staff, with all the responsibilities and support this entails.
  • The placement has a week’s induction and probation period, overseen by the Trust CEO. Placement staff will receive in house training on equipment including boats, radio and survey equipment.
  • The AWT will help to assist placement staff in securing part time paid work in parallel to their placement, to help cover their costs during the placement.
