Background

Responsible for helping to deliver on island conservation in the third largest channel island. The role also places you within a small but tightly knit team of staff and volunteers that make up a Wildlife Trust with the opportunity to learn and develop a range of skills ranging from tractor driving to species and habitat surveys.

Alderney is the third largest of the Channel Islands. The Alderney Wildlife Trust (AWT) promotes the conservation of Alderney’s terrestrial and marine wildlife and associated habitats. The AWT manages two reserves totaling 112ha, a17ha community woodland, a Ramsar site, over 20km of footpaths, along with a handful of smaller sites. You will work alongside the existing staff team developing and policy for sites and delivering practical conservation. This work is supported by a well-established group of long term conservation volunteers.

Accommodation provided, as is 1 return UK-Alderney flights for every 6 month term undertaken. Additional paid part-time work is supported during this contract.

Duties

  • Lead on the management of the Longis Nature Reserve in line with the 5 Year Management Plan in collaboration with the AWT’s CEO and the Alderney Conservation Volunteers and the Trust’s Management Team. This work includes:
    • Supporting the delivery of the reserves and Commmunity Woodland Management strategies including the preparation and reporting on annual action plans.
    • Delivery of practical conservation including supporting the AWT’s Conservation Volunteers and practical conservation including tractor and hand tool work.
    • Support the Terrestrial Ecologist with the AWT’s terrestrial monitoring programme
  • To help review and then drive the preparation of a new 5-year management plan for the Alderney Community Woodland.
  • To promote awareness and understanding of the natural environment within Alderney, and the efforts of the AWT to safeguard it, through organizing events and activities and by making contacts.
  • Support the AWT team in delivering public events and activities under the outreach programme.
  • Assisting in other aspects of the operation of the AWT as required.

Personal Specification

The role requires:

  • Self-motivated and focused person wanting to benefit from their time in this role.
  • A background in Ecology/Conservation Management, minimum BSc or equivalent, or a year’s relevant work experience.
  • An interest in conservation planning with an understating of habitat management, looking to develop these skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Flexibility and positivity.
  • Full, clean driving licence.

Desirable experience:

  • An understanding and some experience of Geographical Information Systems (ArcGIS or equivalent).
  • Use and maintenance of hand tools and power machinery.
  • Working with and managing volunteers.
  • Experience of ecological monitoring/surveying techniques.

The structure of the work placement will be as follows: 

  • The placement includes two return flights (approx. total value £440) or sailings to the UK (one for every 6 months of placement completed).
  • Free accommodation at the AWT’s Essex Farm Field Centre (inclusive of private room, wi-fi access, shared kitchen, sitting-room and office facilities)
  • The person undertaking this role will act as a full-time placement member of staff, with all the responsibilities and support this entails.
  • The placement has a week’s induction and probation period, overseen by the Trust CEO. Placement staff will receive in house training on equipment including tractor, powerscythe, brushcutters and hand tools.
  • The AWT will help to assist placement staff in securing part time paid work in parallel to their placement, to help cover their costs during the placement.
