This role provides a great opportunity to work outdoors with a dynamic ranger team in a beautiful setting. Through this volunteer role you will develop new skills and practical experience in coast & countryside conservation and access work.

By getting involved, you could

  • Spend time outdoors in one of Cornwall’s unique places.
  • Join a friendly and varied team and make some new friends.
  • Learn new countryside skills and help look after important landscapes for future generations.
  • Get ‘on the job’ training with experienced rangers and (depending on work plans) access to more formal courses to further your career e.g. first aid, brushcutter use.
  • Learn about the Lizard’s unique history, landscape and its wildlife and conservation.
  • Use your passion for the outdoors and share your knowledge and enthusiasm with both locals and visitors.

What's involved?

  • Helping the ranger team with practical work to keep the countryside in great condition and to a high standard of conservation and presentation.
  • Using tools, machinery and equipment and maintaining them in a safe working order in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Working on all types of terrain and ground conditions in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Being flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances and plans.
  • Maintaining good relationships with people who share the land.
  • Learning more about The Lizard Peninsula, its history, landscape, nature and archaeology.
  • Sharing what’s great about The Lizard with local people and visitors; helping people understand why we need to take care of special places; providing people with a warm welcome and helping them have a safe and enjoyable day.
  • Opportunities to assist with events and education projects across the Lizard Peninsula.
  • Getting to know health and safety procedures in countryside work
  • AND there might be some other activities that are of interest to you, that we could use your help with….
  • Accommodation can be provided if needed

This role will suit you if you are...

  • Outdoorsy, whatever the weather’s doing.
  • Reasonably fit and healthy – you don’t need to be Bear Grylls but you’ll do a lot of walking and practical tasks
  • An excellent communicator, willing to get involved and work as part of a team.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances and plans.
  • Keen to work with people and animals!
  • Passionate about the countryside and keen to find out the best spots on The Lizard
  • Available to volunteer at least 28 hrs / week (by negotiation) for a suggested time of 6-12 months.

Extra information

  • We’ll help you get to know The Lizard, how you can help and how you will work with the rest of the team – with induction and training 
  • We provide equipment to help you do this role well and safely
  • We’ll also cover agreed costs of your travel between home and The Lizard
