The Streets Ahead, City Bridge Trust funded project in Redbridge is looking for volunteers to assist in led walks with older adults in the borough, to promote walking and sustainable transport and help older people be less isolated and more actively involved in their communities.

Depending on experience this could involve walk leading, working with others to lead a walk together, or walk planning.

To apply please follow the link to the information pack with the volunteer role description and application form on our website. We will require volunteer roles and support until end of March 2019.

Following training and supervision volunteers will:

  • Welcome people to the walks, particularly new walkers.
  • Give a brief introduction before the walk to make sure everyone is prepared.
  • Make sure any paperwork and registers are completed.
  • Lead and manage walks, sometimes jointly with other walk leaders/assistants, (including acting as a “back-marker").
  • Make sure walks are welcoming, friendly, enjoyable and safe, following Living Streets guidelines and requirements.
  • Be able to undertake a simple risk assessment and to trouble shoot and deal with problems arising on the walks.
  • Be able to provide information and signpost people to other walks and activities taking place in the area.
  • Attend occasional walk leaders’ meetings and refresher training

Volunteer benefits - From working on the Streets Ahead programme you will gain :

  • Walk Leader training
  • Experience of working with older and sometimes vulnerable adults
  • The enjoyment of working in an open setting
  • Community engagement
  • The chance to improve your personal health and fitness
  • Social interaction with others
  • The chance to do partnership working with other voluntary and charitable organisations in Redbridge
  • Safeguarding training
  • Opportunity to work at community events
  • If interested, work on other projects in neighbouring boroughs on behalf of Living Streets

We will supply references for volunteers who give a commitment of at least three months. In addition, out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed, ideally travel by public transport, although Living Streets encourages active travel such as walking and cycling.
