The Gardening Team at West Ham Park is looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to support with the management of our Ornamental Gardens. Reporting to the team leader, the Volunteer Gardener will assist in undertaking a full range of horticultural maintenance operations to enhance the general condition of West Ham Park Ornamental gardens.

About us:

West Ham Park has been managed by the City of London since 1874. It contains historic ornamental gardens, a wealth of locally important wildlife habitats and sporting facilities. The City of London owns and manages almost 4,500 hectares of historic and natural open space for public recreation and health.

What will you be doing:

Assist West Ham Gardening team with the horticultural maintenance within the ornamental gardens by:

  • Helping with basic gardening tasks including :
  • Autumn leaf clearing
  • Seasonal Pruning of a range of plants and perennial bedding operations
  • Hand weeding
  • Hoeing weeds
  • Edging lawns
  • Trimming shrubs/topiaries

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Passionate for gardening with an interest in horticulture
  • A positive polite manner and a ‘can do’ attitude
  • Able to use your own initiative and follow instruction where needed
  • Some knowledge in plant identification is desirable
  • Happy to liaise with the Team leader with any requirements for the volunteered task such as tools and any gardening equipment.

We will support you by:

  • Providing a dedicated member of staff as your point of contact
  • Giving you an induction and plan to help you to get the most out of your role
  • Providing on-going supervision to help you get better at your role.
  • Training in basic health & safety.
  • Where needed, you will be given training to complete your role to a high standard.


For this role we ask that you commit for a minimum of 1day (7) hours per week. We are looking for people who are available Monday to Friday .

All volunteers are placed for three months initially which helps managers and volunteers to get a feel for how well the role and volunteer are matched.
