What's involved?

Learn the skills of a forester and join the woods team to plan and carry out ongoing woodland management projects for landscape, conservation and access needs whilst also producing timber for market.

  • Develop skills as a forester, from seed to product
  • Learn skills and gain experience that could help start a career in forestry, arb’ or conservation
  • Opportunity to develop chainsaw skills and build experience
  • Chance to learn countryside skills such as fencing, stone walling, basic carpentry, groundworks and machine maintenance

Brecon Beacons & Monmouthshire has a diverse range of properties with woodland amounting to over 400 ha’s in total on farms, parkland, mountain-edge and by rivers. All sites require regular tree care maintenance and some are in ongoing woodland management projects. The woods team comprises of a Lead Woodland Ranger, Woodland Ranger and Full Time Volunteer (FTV) Woodland Ranger that plan and carry out the woodland management.

This role will suit you if you are …

  • Newly qualified or existing chainsaw user looking to improve your ‘saw skills
  • Looking to gain a greater insight into forestry and the management of woodlands, through all stages, in a way that benefits nature, access and commercial interests
  • Physically active, physically capable and embrace the outdoor challenge in the elements
  • Able to spare 3-4 days a week for at least 9-12 months

Extra Information

  • A chainsaw qualification is essential to get the most out of this role
  • A driving licence and car is beneficial due to office/house location, but not essential
  • Accommodation available free of charge
