Wildlife Trainees (Conservation) x2

Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT)

Littlemore, Oxford

Volunteer • Part Time

Sectors: conservation & wildlife

Closing date: Tuesday, 7th August 2018

We are looking to recruit two volunteer Wildlife Trainees to join a dedicated team delivering a programme of works across our Oxfordshire reserves.

The appointed Trainees, based out of Oxford, will gain experience on a wide variety of habitats across our 25+ Oxfordshire reserves. From the limestone grasslands on the edge of the Cotswolds, the floodplain meadows of the Thames, the boggy fens around Oxford, to the mature beech woodlands and chalk grassland of the Chilterns.

The Wildlife Trainees’ role involves practical conservation on the reserves; restoring and improving habitats for wildlife. Trainees will help to look after our livestock, repair and install site infrastructure, use power tools and machinery, carry out species surveys, vegetation management, and lead volunteers. There is also an opportunity to assist other Oxfordshire teams with environmental education and events.

Alongside the day-to-day learning experiences, all Trainees have access to a substantial amount of external and internal training, covering topics such as habitat management, species identification, surveying, community engagement and interview training. A training budget is available which includes externally certified training in First Aid at Work and NPTC chainsaw CS30&31. Limited travel expenses are also available. The position would suit those wishing to develop the skills required to follow a career in the wildlife and countryside sector.

Applicants should have a keen interest in UK wildlife conservation, a good level of physical fitness, a valid UK driving licence, and be willing to supervise and lead volunteers. Relevant volunteering experience is desirable.
