About the organisation

Nottingham Bikeworks (NBW) utilises bikes and cycling as a tool for engagement, education and enrichment for groups, organisations and individuals, with a particular focus on disadvantaged groups: e.g. young people struggling to access mainstream education; young adults not in education, employment or training; adults with mental health problems; refugee communities.

We work with an increasing number of community groups, schools and other local organisations delivering a range of projects and courses that use bikes and cycling to develop practical skills and build confidence. We offer both vocational and qualification based training.

We are a not-for-profit Community Interest Company and are looking to move to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. We believe cycling is ideal urban transport as well as being fun, affordable, healthy and sustainable.

Our primary goals are to:

  • Encourage and support more people to ride more bikes more often.
  • Utilise bikes and cycling as tools for education, enablement and engagement.

We achieve this by:

  • Providing a fully inclusive workshop environment with expert supervision.
  • Saving functional bicycles and reusable parts from recycling and landfill and offer them for resale and reuse at reasonable prices.
  • Encouraging self-reliance and skill-sharing through provision of bike maintenance classes and workshop sessions.
  • Delivering a wide range of projects and training opportunities for individuals, groups and organisations, with a particular focus on those experiencing disadvantage.
  • Keeping bikes on the road by carrying out repairs both at the workshop and in the community.
  • Acting as a community focus for bike-related activities
