BBOWT is looking for an enthusiastic individual with an interest in motivating people to learn about and protect wildlife. As a Trainee you will have opportunities to develop and practice your community engagement skills while helping provide excellent experiences for visitors to our busy Nature Discovery Centre.

You will gain experience of working with children and families, running events, sessions for groups and schools and practical conservation. The Centre and nearby Thatcham Reedbeds are a beautiful urban oasis on the edge of Thatcham. We run a wide ranging programme of events throughout the year designed to engage local people with the wildlife which is right on their doorstep and inspire them to protect it. These events include family wildlife days, bird of prey days and wildlife photography courses as well as many more. There will be opportunities to get involved in our numerous wildlife clubs catering for children aged 2 to 16 as well as activities for local community groups such a brownies and scouts. We also run health and wellbeing projects, including a café for people living with dementia and their loved ones. There will be an opportunity to be involved in these projects as well.

Alongside the day-to-day learning experiences, you will receive a substantial amount of external and internal training, covering community engagement, environmental education, habitat management, species ID, and interview training among many others. This will include external accreditation such as the St John Ambulance First Aid at Work certificate and one other external training course in community engagement. Travel expenses are also available.

You will need to have a strong desire to work in nature conservation and an interest in encouraging others to take action for wildlife. Enthusiasm, an ability to engage with people from a range of ages and backgrounds, physical fitness and a valid driving license, are essential. Some experience of working or volunteering with groups or schools is desirable as is relevant education.
