Role Aim:

Wild Schools is an outdoor education project based in West Ham Park in Newham. We are aiming to deliver great learning experiences to local primary students through hands & fun outdoor lessons.

Using the varied environment of the West Ham Park, we deliver education sessions for all primary subjects which are engaging, hands on and memorable. Each session is designed to suit the needs of a specific class topic in collaboration with the teacher.

So far we have taught over 5000 students outside since the project began in October 2016 in subjects as diverse as maths, art, local history and geography.

Get involved to develop great skills in teaching outside at primary level using innovative and effective learner centred techniques.

What you will be doing:

Maximising the positive experience of visiting primary school children and teachers, by:

  • Helping to set up and pack away resources for outdoor sessions at various locations within West Ham Park.
  • Supporting individuals and small groups of students in learning activities outdoors.
  • Engaging with teachers about what they might want from future outdoor education sessions.

And beyond the delivery of sessions, you could help us to:

  • Develop new sessions to bring subjects like Maths and English to life in the setting of the park.
  • Undertake outreach in local schools; for example by supporting the project officer to deliver assemblies.
  • Create and make resources to help teachers and children learn outdoors.

We are looking for someone who

  • Enjoys working with children aged between 5 -11
  • Understands that learners have differing needs and supports individuals sensitively
  • Is comfortable being outdoors and is not put off by the weather
  • Relishes hands-on practical tasks outdoors which bring learning to life (e.g. pond dipping, testing soil PH, orienteering with maps)
  • Is keen to learn new teaching skills or develop existing ones
  • Appreciates working within a small team and sharing ideas

What you will gain:

  • Volunteering is fun! You meet new people, explore new places and get behind the scenes of how things run.
  • We provide opportunities for volunteers to socialise and to celebrate and say thank you for your contribution.
  • Gain experience in teaching in the growing sector of outdoor education.
  • Learn innovative ways to teach maths, English and science outside with natural resources.
  • Improve your knowledge of UK wildlife, plants and bush craft skills
  • Work in a stimulating outdoor environment as part of a supportive team.
  • Work with local schools and improve confidence teaching a range of primary ages.

We will support you by

  • Paying reasonable travel expenses (Please note, we encourage people to volunteer locally)
  • Providing a dedicated member of staff as your point of contact from the beginning till the end of your placement
  • Giving you an induction and plan to help you to get the most out of your placement
  • Providing on-going training to help you get better at your role

Commitment

  • All volunteers are placed for three months initially which helps managers and volunteers to get a feel for how well the role and volunteer are matched
  • We are looking for people who are available during weekdays to support sessions for up to three hours in length, as and when school bookings occur
